Got my Bfp today after nearly 3 years of trying!! I'm about 5 weeks or just under and I thought as soon as I'd got my Bfp id know exactly what to do and feel but now I'm sat here thinking, what do I actually need to do next, I never got as far as to plan this bit. I know make an appointment with gp but is that it? Is it just a waiting game until your first midwife appointment. All of a sudden I'm feeling quite overwhelmed and anxious about the next few weeks. Just wanted a bit of advice really
Thanks

Phone your GP, the receptionist will be able to tell you whether or not you need a GP appointment or if you can self refer. From there it's essentially just a waiting game for your booking in appointment with your midwife. It's usually done at 8+weeks, in my area it's at 10+ weeks.

In the meantime it's recommended to take folic acid and vit D supplements if you're not already, many women choose to take a general pregnancy supplement.

The NHS website has good general information such as recommended foods to avoid and things like caffeine intake. If you have any health problems or pregnancy complications before you're booked in with the midwife, you should see your GP.

Congratulations!!!

Phone GP but unlikely you’ll need an appointment. You’ll see the midwife at around 8 weeks.

Congratulations! I wrote this exact same post 7 years ago! The advice was to register the pregnancy (I did it via a phone appointment with my gp) and get registered with the midwife and hospital. Then the advice was to try to keep myself busy until the 12 week scan. It was honestly the longest wait of my life but we are the proud and very happy parents of a wonderful 6 year old and time since the birth has flown. I wish you best of luck with this pregnancy. Before running the gauntlet of a Monday morning GP surgery phone line, look online at the surgery website to see what the protocol is for your area for referring to the midwives - in some areas you can self refer online, in others you have to get a form at the surgery and in still other places you actually have to go in face to face with GP.

Don’t be surprised if no one does a repeat pregnancy test - home ones are generally seen as no less accurate than those available to GP’s so they will all take your word for it - and the first absolute proof that you will get is your dating scan at 12-ish weeks.

You should be booked in to see the midwife between 8-11 weeks and they will then arrange your scan - though in some areas you will get a letter for the scan before you see the midwife.

Start (if not already taking) vitamin D and folic acid supplements which you can easily buy over the counter - my midwife said no need to take multivitamins at this stage.

I will add to the advice already given- get something to keep you busy for the next 7 weeks. Honestly it's a really long wait and feels like nothing is happening. I did a lot of knitting!

I second @DavidBowiesBulge every days is a complete mixture of is it ok, excitement, worry
So just keep occupied.
Also, we have a feb 2020 chat going if you want to join? We're all ranging between new bfp and like 6/7 weeks. I've found it really useful, makes you feel less alone x

Thanks everyone, just went into panic mode as soon as I saw the positive test feeling a little more relaxed today, told my mum and mil and it all seems a bit more real and exciting now!

I’ve only just moved areas so need to register with new gp so will ask what procedure is when I go to register

Thanks everyone your words really do make a difference!
