Rant-less movements today

Just had to get it off my chest. I'm 22 weeks pregnant my baby has been extremely active from 16 weeks day and night. I have hardly felt movement since 10 last night. All the maternity advice is to call the midwife if this happens. Phoned the unit the ward clerk answered trying to give me advice which I found strange. Asked to talk to a midwife and she said it's unusual for a baby to move at 16 weeks but if you think it's what you felt.....made me feel so stupid for calling them. After me saying I am concerned and had issues in my previous pregnancy she said to come and listen to the heart beat. Not happy at all.

They shouldn't have made you feel stupid but they don't tend to do proper monitoring until 28 weeks. Have you taken them up on their offer to monitor heartbeat to check up on things?

It's hard being pregnant, having to work out what's going on without being able to see! Baby may have just wiggled themselves into a position that you can't feel them as well in.

Hope all is OK Thanks

Yes thats true. Just says on all the booklets they give you to call them if any change. Yes I'm going to go and listen to heart beat. Will make me feel better if nothing else. Baby usually boots and shifts around all the time and keeps me awake half the night doing so.
Thankyou

She did invite you in though, so it’s not like she dismissed your fears. And as pp said they generally tell you that there won’t be a defined pattern until a bit later so maybe that’s why?
She shouldn’t have made you feel stupid though, I hate that, it’s really not on especially when you’re just following advice!

Midwife told me ‘it’s not possible’ to feel baby before 18-20wks. I could feel my baby from about 15wks - also coincided with movements during scans. It is a little later when the ‘kicks count’ is monitored, if baby is facing your back you may not feel it so much, few weeks time those kicks get a lot stronger so there is no hiding from them. Try having something sugary, always seems to wake up my hungry baby and he gets very active x

I'm over 17 weeks and my midwife tried listening to my baby's heartbeat with the Doppler for the first time at 16+6. She could feel the baby kicking against the doppler and wasn't surprised in the slightest that I had been feeling the baby for over a week. So that midwife is chatting utter shit to be frank. It may be more unusual to feel movements so early, but it's very very possible.

Don't let what she said put you off. Not all midwives are created equal and some are better than others with how supportive they are. It's totally normal for them to only listen to the heartbeat at this stage rather than put you on a monitor.

Go to triage. Don't take no for an answer

Thankyou I felt movements in my last pregnancy 15-16 weeks. I went down and all was well. Strong heart beat she said maybe the baby is resting.

It is of course possible to feel movements very early.

However it’s after 24 weeks that’s guidelines recommended monitoring the movements as that’s when baby is viable and could be delivered in an emergency if there was a problem. Prior to this even if a problem was detected there is sadly nothing that can be done.

The full monitoring where the babies heart rate is tracked and you get a printout showing it over 20 minutes can only be done after 28 weeks.

Sorry you were made to feel stupid as this is not how you should have been treated and there are much nicer ways to explain why movements at this point are not as much of a concern.
