Hello everyone,

On Friday I took a prrgnancy test and it came out positive. I took one today and again a positive. I've had really bad acidity problems for the past almost 2 weeks now and was taking gaviscon. My mum says it's ok to take it but I'm wondering how much I can take at once. I take tablets most of the time and just now had 4 tablets at once (that's how bad it is) but I'm wondering if it's safe to have so many.

This is our first child so I am quite literally clueless. Will appreciate all advice from mums and women who've been through this.

Thank you Smile

gaviscon and rennies are fine to take. I literally used to drink the stuff with DS1 but I'd recommend taking whatever the recommended dosage is.

By the end you might fine that is your new best friend!

I seem to almost constantly suck orange Rennie’s at times and have a bottle of Aniseed Gaviscon at the ready for when they aren’t enough. I’m also going to mention it when I go to the Drs this week as there’s a few things I need to discuss with them (I’m 23 weeks so a lot further along than you) the advice I’ve read is stick to the guidelines on the box and they’re totally safe during pregnancy and, if they aren’t enough, there are prescribed medications you can take.

Buddytheelf85 · 09/06/2019 08:58

I’m 33 weeks and living on the stuff...

Wow I never realized so many people go through this too.

Thank you all for sharing your own experiences. Smile

See your GP
They can prescribe medication that’s far more effective. And free!

Ribenaberriesgowoo82 · 09/06/2019 17:32

I did read that "overdosing" on rennies and the like increase the risk of kidney stones. Something to do with pregnant women secreting more calcium in their urine anyway plus the calcium in rennies adds up to more than the kidneys can handle. Shame I read this after living off them recently. rolls eyes I'll be going to the doctor for something more suitable and effective this week.

What if your gp won't prescribe it? I went to mine a few weeks ago and told her I had bad acid and nausea and she just said I have to keep eating and that's it, and I've been suffering since then...:(

Mintypea5 · 09/06/2019 19:41

@pinkstar01 you can buy gaviscon and rennie in the supermarket / boots etc.
For the sickness sometimes if it's really bad they can prescribe anti sickness meds but you might have to be a persistent about that

pinkstar01 · 09/06/2019 20:41

@Mintypea5 I've tried both gaviscon and rennie but they don't touch the acid at all...I see other people on here talking about prescription antiacjds but my gp won't prescribe anything ag all and I don't have the energy to keep going back :(

Try having smaller meals too and avoiding too much oily and spicy food too, fruit juices often set me off. Mint seems to help. I had horrendous acid reflux right through previous pregnancies but this time I’ve managed to reduce it, haven’t needed to take anything for it. Doctor will prescribe liquid that you can just take swigs of whenever needed x

ffiffi8 · 09/06/2019 23:46

36 + 4 and living on the tablets... it's horrendous! Never suffered with acid reflux before Sad

Mintypea5 · 10/06/2019 06:40

@pinkstar01 mine would only prescribe gaviscon. I literally just lived off rennie with DS1 it was horrible. I'd never hd anything like it before

Teddyreddy · 10/06/2019 07:16

@pinkstar01 you can buy rantidine/Zantac over the counter if your GP won't prescribe it. It's half the dose of the prescription stuff that I'm on but it will be more effective than gaviscon. They might not sell it to you if they know you are pregnant, so depending on how big your bump is you may need someone else to get it for you.

Bloomburger · 10/06/2019 07:20

I lived in yogurt, cold, sticks to the sore burning bits and that was really important when your pelvic floor has all but given up the ghost and you've a constant cough from the pool of acid sitting in your throat.

I'm surprised the surgeon didn't have to peel a foil lid off before extracting DD!

Whoopsies · 10/06/2019 07:33

That's so frustrating that people are having problems getting medication prescribed. My reflux has been awful this time, starting right from week 6. By week 9 I was throwing up each evening so I went to the gp and told him I wanted 20mg a day Omeprezole. He didn't argue and I've been on it since, one tablet a day and no heartburn/reflux at all, it's amazing stuff. It's totally safe in pregnancy. Sorry to all those suffering!

Happy4ever88 · 10/06/2019 14:56

@whoopsies

I might have to do that if all else fails. I'm getting so annoyed at this......
