How long will my fabulous hair last after birth?

I am 28 weeks with twins and my hair is amazing! I don't even need to condition it anymore, and I only wash it once a week. It's strong, soft and lovely. Which was a shock, because before getting pregnant it was a mess.

Apparently all the extra oestrogen is responsible for this. So for mums with other children - what happened your hair after delivery?

It was glorious until about 3 months and then it started falling out big time, leaving big bald spots.
It's back to normal now.

milkjetmum · 08/06/2019 14:07

Yes about 4 months for me, enjoy it while it lasts!

pastabest · 08/06/2019 14:08

You are good until about 3-4 months post partum and then it all starts falling out.

Sorry Grin

My sister didn’t suffer from a great amount of noticeable hair-loss. The trick is to start nursing supplements (she used Pregnacare Nursing) and ensure you correct any nutritional deficiencies at least a little before the birth - it encourages new hair growth and so by the time your pregnancy hair falls out you have new hair to replace the bald patches.

moreismore · 08/06/2019 14:12

Yeah I’d say 4 months

villainousbroodmare · 08/06/2019 14:14

Enjoy it. By the time your babies are 6mo you'll likely have lovely inch-long wisps sticking up all along your hairline. Grin

Bambamber · 08/06/2019 14:19

About 4 or 5 months for me, even with breastfeeding supplements

LucheroTena · 08/06/2019 14:19

Mine felt different immediately. I then lost quite a bit, but no bald patches. I had it cut shorter and it looked and felt better. Then new hairs came through again. I don’t think it’s that noticeable for most people really, you just notice it as it becomes so lovely in pregnancy.

Loopytiles · 08/06/2019 14:20

10 mins for me, loads snapped off at the front and never properly recovered Sad

Sexnotgender · 08/06/2019 14:21

I’m 4 months post partum and I’ve lost a shit load of hair! I cleaned my shower drain last week and it was unbelievable.

I’m lucky however to have enough hair usually for about 8 people so no bald patches.

Wurlysurly · 08/06/2019 14:24

3 months for me, baby is 18 months now and my hair is only starting to recover. I'd love my preggo hair back!!

Peachesandcream14 · 08/06/2019 14:29

My hair seemed to get ridiculously thick during pregnancy, and to my surprise it never fell out and DD is now 3 years old. It is however much, much coarser in texture than it was, and my curls disappeared Sad

Soov567 · 08/06/2019 14:36

About 4-5 months for me. DS is 18 months now and the wispy new growth is just starting to thicken and not stick out at all angles. I’m 9 weeks pregnant though so the whole cycle is starting again, very excited to get my pregnancy hair back!

JohnLapsleyParlabane · 08/06/2019 14:39

Mine went beautiful in my first pregnancy and has remained unusually nice till now, 3.6yrs later. However I'm 10wks pp with baby 2 and am afraid it will all fall out or go horrible soon!

moonlight1705 · 08/06/2019 14:53

3 months for me too, I've not developed bald patches but seem to be growing way more greys than before.

Cosmogirl86 · 08/06/2019 14:54

I guess I have at least a few months left then, though I didn't realise that the hair falling out could be so dramatic!

About 3 months pp for me too - no major loss but I had patchy bits along my temples, then wispy sticky out baby hair grew through and made it look even worse for a bit! Hair down or up with a scarf helped a bit.

bitchfromhell · 08/06/2019 19:06

4 months for me then it literally came away in handfuls. I have bald patches above my temples. It went very dry immediately after delivery though.
On the plus side I still don't need to wash it very often but now it's because there isn't enough to bother with.
I do have a lovely crop of chin hair coming through instead, so that's nice.

MumOfTwoMasterOfNone · 08/06/2019 19:09

3-4 months and then my always thick hair was awful and I had big bald patches, particularly noticeable on the sides of my head when I had my hair up (always with a baby). I ended up at the G.P. who agreed it wasn't normal and did blood tests which were ok apart from milks anaemia, but I had two DC quite close together and it was worse after the second.

TheLetterOfTheLawTheLetter · 08/06/2019 20:01

3 months, it came out in clumps but never looked noticeably thinner. What I hated was how dull it looked, until probably 8 months PP at which point glossy hair returned. Just to say it does come back, it may seem silly but when you're tired and feeling mumsy, it matters to know these things!

I'm pregnant with dc2 and living the hair. Bizarrely, as before, I have to wash it a lot less too, shiny and not greasy on day 3. Let's enjoy the wins!

SoyDora · 08/06/2019 20:03

Mine started to come out in handfuls at 4 months. The annoying wispy bits are starting to grow now Sad

boodles101 · 08/06/2019 20:28

Around 3 months for me too but only patchy around the temples. I'm currently 26weeks with DCDA twins! How are you finding the twin pregnancy? And what type of twins have you got?

fonxey · 08/06/2019 23:31

Uhm, when does it start? My hair is so terrible, in looking threats to it becoming lovely.

Cosmogirl86 · 09/06/2019 04:32

@boodles101 I'm carrying MCDA twins! It's been tough, but lm almost there as I'll be having elcs around 36 weeks. These are my first babies.

@fonxey I noticed it around 19 weeks! I still don't have the glowing skin due to anemia and other issues, but at least I have the hair!

Im dreading the post partum hair falling out. I lost so much i was terrified to wash my hair and would do it once a week if not longer. Mine got really thin and my mum really happily pointed out how thing it was and starting to get patches at the front. My eyebrows fell out too, not fully but i had gaps in them and have had to pencil them in ever since, only now im pregnant again have they filled in themselves
