Dental care help?!

Hi everyone,

I have sent off for my maternity exemption certificate today. I am at the dentist on Monday. My question: the dentist i go to is private, not NHS. Its a consultation to have a wisdom tooth removed (I was referred there by my regular dentist who said he is unable to remove the wisdom tooth) and the cost for the consultation is £60 and if I need an X-ray it will be an additional £50! Does the certificate cover this as I know it does for NHS dental care .... but not sure about private dental care.... !

Thank you!

Explain to them you’re worried aabout infection unfortunately you’re still in first trimester so that may be why they are hesitant to do it. I’m in 2nd which they said was the safest time so ask them if you can have it done then. Only downfall then obviously is you’ll be on painkillers for a while I don’t know which option is better for you. Is it a normal wisdom tooth that is decaying? Mine was impacted and the top was completely worn away which I didn’t know. (I kept the teeth sort of as a reminder to keep on top of my dental health and never let it get that bad again). The dentist ended up referring me to the dental hospital with an appointment for the next day as he didn’t have the equipment to deal with the impacted one. They also had to cut my gum and give me stitches to get to it but is in the healing process, still painful but not nearly as much as it was before. They also noticed a wisdom at the top they said was decaying so that will need treating too at some point. I hope they get you sorted, keep me updated! You might want to start using corsodyl too to prevent infection I’ve started using it.

Sorry you're in so much pain. I had a root canal while pregnant and it was honestly one of the best days of that year - I had been in so much pain and unable to have decent painkillers.
I'm sure they'll find a solution for you.

Any news Marty93?

Marty93 · 08/06/2019 21:04

@comeongeorge basically told me I need to wait until I'm in 2nd trimester.... I'm so upset as in constant pain can barely eat or drink. I'm 9+3 so feel like I've got ages to go..... they said they can't even put a temp filling in because the part of the wisdom tooth that has snapped off is so deep it goes right down and exposes the nerve so it wouldn't even do anything apparently.

I've just been told to try and keep it as clean as possible and if I suspect I'm getting an infection to go back to the dentist to have it flushed :(

Luckily this afternoon the pain seems to have settled down, but daren't eat anything incase it sets me off! But then if I don't eat anything I'll feel sick.... catch 22! Lol.

Feel like just locking myself away for the next few weeks! X

Soft diet, soup/mash etc atleast for now. Did they tell you what painkillers you can take?

Marty93 · 09/06/2019 18:50

Hi all just thought I would update for any of you who are interested !

So today has been horrendous - not been able to barely eat or drink anything as ANYthing touching the tooth itself sends me into orbit. I was sat on my kitchen floor rocking and sobbing earlier after trying to eat some Luke-warm soup.

I've rang 111 and begged for someone to do something. A dental nurse rang me back and is going to ring the specialist who I was referred to who cancelled my appointment because I was pregnant. She said they shouldn't have done that as I CAN have an X-ray when pregnant and I CAN have my tooth extracted in my first trimester, if the reason is justified which in my case it is (the pain and risk of infection).

So fingers crossed I get some news tomorrow!

@Marty93 ooh good luck when I had this and had it out the relief was amazing I actually stopped off at Greggs and got an iced ring donut on the way home for when I could eat again Grin

comeongeorge · 09/06/2019 19:36

Oh Marty93 I have thought about you today.
Everything crossed u will get actual action, it took me 4 emergency dentist appointments.
Sending positive vibes and u will soon be out of pain

Marty93 · 10/06/2019 08:53

@comeongeorge thank you. I have spoken to my dentist and basically sobbed down the phone because I'm in so much pain. He has referred me urgently to someone who can have a look and possibly extract today. I'm thrilled at the possibility of not having any pain, but my mum has now really worried me and said I need to ring the midwife because the local anaesthetic could harm the baby. But I read on the internet that the anaesthetic is safe? Has anyone actually had dental surgery before 12 weeks? I definitely can not wait as there is a risk of infection and also I am losing significant weight due to mixture of morning sickness and now not being able to eat or drink without being in agony. Catch 22!

Just an update for anyone who is still interested:

The tooth is out! Hurrah hurrah!

I didn't have an X-ray (this was a risk I was willing to take) and the extraction was not very straight forward as my roots were growing in different directions. But it is out! And I didn't feel diddly squat :)

Ah! So pleased. I bet you're feeling so much better and in the next few days you will actually start to feel normal again Thanks
