Would you recommend a Baby Bjorn?

Or would a different type of sling be better, based on your experience? We are thinking of buying a BB on eBay, not new. I'd welcome any comments.
Thanks

A bb was great when dd was tiny - she was in it from about 4 weeks until about 5 months. The problem I encountered then was that as the bb put all her weight on my shoulders, I couldn't carry her very far in it by then without my back killing me. So I sold it and bought an ergo here, which is a much better design, as it puts most of dd's weight on my hips and the shoulder straps just support her upright. Last month I managed to walk all the way down down the cobbles at Clovelly with her in the ergo - she weighed about 9kgs at the time.

it was great again until about 5 months, we then moved onto a backpack thing. you need to get the one with the lumber support as it spreads the weight more.

TheApprentice · 23/07/2007 12:24

Agree totally with witchandchips

JolieGirl · 23/07/2007 12:26

for young babies definitely. Don't buy a new one though, as you won't need it for long

alicet · 23/07/2007 12:26

I found the baby bjorn great. Esp on holidays when you are waiting for your luggage having got off the plane and don't have your pushchair yet! (parents live a few hours away and I flew to see them a lot)

Easier when they're facing you as doesn't put so much stress on your back.

Think I might be tempted with a hug a bub instead though - can't justify getting both (expecting ds2 in Oct) but if I had seen these first might have got instead as seems more versatile

MuffinMclay · 23/07/2007 12:28

I used it everyday until ds was about 4 months, then it started to hurt my neck too much.

If you and dh/dp are very different heights or shapes I'd recommend getting 2. It drove me mad having to adjust the straps all the time after he'd used it.

bagsundereyes · 23/07/2007 12:31

We have a big baby (17lb at 4 months!) and the bjorn (without lumbar support - I am a fool) has been rather uncomfortable for a good while now. I persist only because DD loves it! We are now looking at having to shell out for something else. Perhaps you could see if there's something more versatile out there?

LittleB · 23/07/2007 12:32

I used mine loads, I had the one with extra back support(active?), used it until dd was about 7 mths, then got a back pack, she was big for her age and I was little but I found it great for carrying her about.

thehairybabysmum · 23/07/2007 12:38

I had a bb...it was great when DS was small (i used it loads until he was about 6 months ish). If you do get one get the one with extra back support as this is definitely worth the extra. I used to walk 1.5 miles each way into town with it on no problem most days.

I hired an Ergo to try when DS was bigger, i liked it but it was not as comfy to wear as the BB...the straps didn't feel as secure on my shoulders..it felt like they slipped down a bit and only the chest strap held them together. I only used it on my back though never in the front new baby position.

Some people on here say BBs not good for babies to do with the hips (???) but never had a problem with DS.

nimnom · 23/07/2007 12:41

BB is excellent idea. Used mine loads with ds2 especially on school run.

MrsBadger · 23/07/2007 12:53

wrap sling like a hug-a-bub is much comfier and holds them in the same position, or there's the Wilkinet whihc is kind of a cross between a wrap and a structured carrier like the Bjorn
would certainly get one with a waist strap rather than shoulders-only

funnypeevesculiar · 23/07/2007 13:10

Had a lumbar support one, which I have to say I loved - worth the extra money, imho.
Then moved onto a ring sling, which I still use (dd is now 16 mths) - can't take her out without someone asking me where I got it from

JoMa · 23/07/2007 13:15

I have used a BB but I found it put strain on my back and got myself a Mei Tai instead. far more comfortable and lasts for much longer.

Brangelina · 23/07/2007 13:23

I had both the BB and a ring sling and tbh used my sling a lot more. Firstly when DD was newborn, as it held her in a more natural position IMO (and she was happier in it too) and subsequently most times I went out with her, right up until about 18mo.

The BB is brilliant when you need 2 hands, but for the rest of the time it is a faff putting it on (or else I was particularly inept, but with the sling you just pop it over your head and pop baby in), in winter DD's legs kept getting cold even with a snowsuit on, it gave me backache and last but not least it only lasts you 6 months or so.

I think you have to try both to see what you're comfortable with.

Pollyanna · 23/07/2007 13:27

I wouldn't recommend it tbh. I used it with my first and after about 12 weeks found it agonising for my back. With my other 3 children I used a hug-a-bub and used it much longer each time with no back pain at all.

DANCESwithDumbledore · 23/07/2007 13:31

I REALLY wouldn't bother getting one if you have had back pain during pg at all. We had one but I couldn't use it (because of my back) DH did use it though I suppose!

TheBlonde · 23/07/2007 13:36

I have a wrap sling and a BB
Wrap doesn't really get a look in as the BB is much quicker to use

The BB with the lumbar support is so much better
We used a normal BB last time and it was uncomfy after a short time
