Hi everyone, wasnt sure where to post this. My baby is 13 days old, do you think this looks like blocked tear duct or conjunctivitis?. Waiting on the doctor phoning me back. Thanks

My newborn had a gunky eye for about 2-3 weeks after birth, looked very similar to yours. I just kept squirting breast milk in it and wiped it 2/3 times a day with chopped boiled water with a pinch of salt in, one day it just vanished. What did the midwife/hv say at your 5 and 10 day checks, or was it not evident then? Unless the white of the eyes go pink or yellow etc then I don't think there's much to worry about. Hope it clears up soon!

Cooled boiled water, not chopped!

Same as Katonic, my newborn was like this. As long as the whites of the eyes are ok I think it’s alright. My little guy had this on and off for a few weeks, each time having a gunky eye for a day or so.

My little girl had a very similar thing, I thought it was conjunctivitis but turns out it was a blocked tear duct that resolved itself eventually. Just had to keep bathing it with warm water to clear the crusty gunk away. She still gets a watery eye every now and then at 20 months. If you are concerned though get it checked out, I know I felt better after getting the GP to have a look just in case.

So cute. Poor little thing.
My DD was born with a blocked tear duct and it looked like that. It was picked up in hospital though and they sent us home with sterilised water sachets to clean it.
Hope the gp gets back in touch with you soon, it’ll be easily treated

Hi op it doesn't look anything to be worried about and usually if it's an infection the eye would also be red as pp have mentioned it's normal for newborns to have gunky eyes for a few weeks my DD did as did my DS just keep it cleaned daily with cooled boiled water and cotton balls gently wipe away from the eye and use different clean cotton balls for each eye

My 2 weeks old looked exactly like this. Took her to GP and was prescribed drops. Please take her to the GP

OP, are you BF'ing. My DS had this for months and months. I have photos of him with green and yellow gunk oozing and dripping down his face. Yuk! The doc said he had a problem with his tear duct and may need an op at 1 year if not resolved.

I was at a baby group and the leader turned to me and told me to squeeze my boob milk into his eye. I thought she was batty, but gave it a go. I did it for 2 days and it never came back.

If you have some then do it. Just drop/squeeze a few drops to wash out the eye and do it a few times a day. It has anti-bacterial properties and it should clear it up.

All of my newborns were like this, it wasn’t conjunctivitis. It’s normal, they can’t produce tears yet.
