Low lying placenta/Placenta previa

Morning ladies

Just wondered if anyone had any experience with this?

At 20wk scan my placenta was completely covering my cervix. I’ve got a scan tomorrow (33wks) to see if it’s moved then an appointment after with a consultant (guessing to possibly discuss caesarean?)

If any of you had this, was your caesarean booked after this scan at 32/33wks or did you have another scan? Did they give you any choice in it?

I’ve come round to the idea of having a caesarean now so would rather know either way tomorrow than to have another scan in a few weeks!

Thank you x

Hello! Yes I do, mine was also completely covering the OS. I don’t want to worry you but I also thought that ‘oh well, I’ll just have to have a csection’ - no-one ever mentioned what could happen. So, at 28 weeks I had a massive bleed on the train home from work (didn’t hurt, just a total haemorrhage)

I was in hospital, had blood transfusions but continued to bleed and it started to kick off contractions so he was born the following day. We managed 12hrs of steroids.

He’s fine, and if you are already at 33 weeks then even if you had the same happen - your baby is almost fully cooked, but I would take the next few weeks really easy....

My daughter had this and was re-scanned again at 38 weeks then booked in for her section. Like you, she had gotten used to the idea of a section and would've preferred not to be scanned again, the uncertainty unsettled her. Her placenta hadn't moved though so all was fine.

Hers was only partial though, if yours is completely covering your cervix it may be different.

Good luck, I hope it all goes well

*born by csection. I was really lucky in that I had a normal csection scar, but quite regularly with placenta previa they do the csection from belly button down vertically.

Thank you for your responses ladies, both really helpful!

I too would rather just know either way than keep re-scanning.

If it’s still completely covering by 33wks I doubt it’s going to move!

@agog123 I’m glad your DS was ok but that does sound scary! The hospital didn’t forewarn me on anything but I have read online about the potential bleeding x

I had my scan on Tuesday and mine is still completely covering and has been since 15 weeks when I had my first bleed. I am 28+6 they don't expect my placenta to move because of its position but they are re scanning me on 2nd July I'll be nearly 33 weeks and they will be booking my section at my next appointment for 36-37 weeks as that's policy at our hospital as long I have no more bleeds🤞🏻

Make sure you take it easy if it is still covering xx

I had the same op and my csection was booked early from 28 weeks. The recovery wasnt as bad as it's made out to be. Theres just a tiny scar and all fine.

turquoisebaby · 06/06/2019 15:42

I had this and a scan at 32weeks to check the position. By 32 weeks the placenta had moved and I went on the have a natural birth with no complications. It can happen!

Thanks ladies! Let’s see what they say tomorrow! X

Let us know please - I have a low lying placenta too so very interested ;)

Giraffe888 · 07/06/2019 12:08

Placenta is still completely covering cervix so they’ve booked me in for caesarean at 38+6. If I go into labour before that then I’d have to have emergency caesarean

NRTFT but I had this. It was first seen at 20 wks. I was scanned again at 32 and it hadn't moved so again at 36 and then I was booked in for c section two weeks before due date.

Awww least you have a date to work towards, funny how different trusts have different guidelines. Mines between week 36-37 but I also have gestational diabetes and had a previous bleed so don't know if that's difference. Good luck @Giraffe888 xx
