When could palpitations be a problem?

Just a quick question if people got heart palpitations in pregnancy? Currently 23 weeks and about 5-6 times a day my heart literally pounds out my chest, only lasts 5-10 minutes a time but it's been going on for about 2 weeks now. I did google it and it seems as if it is possible in pregnancy but I just wondered if this was a bit too frequent or if it's normal?

It’s completely normal op, it’s only a problem if you’ve suffered some injury or other symptoms alongside to suggest something’s not right

It’s your body (and mind) adapting to the many, many changes

Posted too early...

But do mention it to your GP as they want to know about these things as all manor of symptoms could point to things later on

I would see a doctor so they can check you over .

It’s a problem if you have a hidden / undiscovered heart condition, but you probably would have been checked for those. If you haven’t then request testing. It doesn’t take long.

You're probably a bit anaemic, OP. This can be a symptom of anaemia. How were your latest blood results?

Thanks everyone! I'm at the midwife next week so will mention it to her. I've had quite bad palpitations a few years ago (but caused by stress) and was sent for investigations and an echo and nothing underlying found then, so hopefully it is just a pregnant thing! One of the many obscure pregnancy symptoms nobody talks about!

This happened to me and I was severely anaemia. I had to have an iron transfusion! My heart would pound in my chest like I’d run sprints when all I’d been doing was sat on the sofa. I also felt quite lethargic but not that badly to say I was so low on iron! After the infusion & a couple weeks on tablets, it stopped completely.

Def get yourself to the docs for a blood test. They also made me do a 24 EGC and that showed my heart rate spiking throughout the day..

*anameic (grr autocorrect!)

hannah9176 · 05/06/2019 22:35

@TheVanguardSix I've not had any bloods checked since 8 weeks but all were fine then, although obviously a long time ago. Maybe they'll check again next week when I mention it.

@Bol87 yes that's what it feels like! It's like I can literally hear every chamber slamming shut in my ear! I also can't make it through a day without a nap and have 0 energy so v possibly anaemia. Or v possibly "just pregnant symptoms"!

Please mention it to a GP. I had this at 14 weeks and ended up being investigated for a pulmonary embolism and in hospital for four days after my GP took one listen to my chest and called ahead to ambulatory care.
After lots of tests, including some pretty horrific lung scans they put it down to pregnancy related tachycardia.
Glad it wasn't anything serious, and I only have to go back to the hospital if it goes along with pain. But please mention it to someone so they can have a listen in.

Yes, they started increasing in frequency until it was middle of the night, every night; I was convinced I had a heart issue because I'd had them before pregnancy when I'd had caffeine, alcohol or just at random. Midwife insisted it was just anxiety, until 28 week blood tests when they found I was slightly anaemic. Since the iron kicked in I've only had them after missing a tablet so I'd recommend asking to be tested asap. I feel so much better and wish I'd gone to GP for a second opinion early on.

I've suffered with heart palpitations for just over a year now before I was even pregnant, I went to the gp and was told it's probably just stress or anxiety but I knew it wasn't, I pestered for a ekg just to check I didn't have an underlying heart condition but frustratingly the results were normal so I then pestered for a blood test and actually figured out my heart palpitations were caused by vitamin d deficiency. I'd never heard of lack of vitamin d causing heart palpitations before so was quite surprised but as soon as I was prescribed vitamin d they went away instantly. Now 14 weeks pregnant and again vitamin d is very low again so back on the vitamin d.
