Laying on your back

I know the advise is to not lay on your back....

However is there an amount of time it is safe to do? I tend to read in bed and find laying on my side to read mighty annoying lol!

I don't know if there's a "safe" length of time. I have a big twin bump and can't lie on back for more than few minutes without feeling breathless. I think it's best practice to get used to lying on your side

Depends how pregnant you are too. Not on back advice tends to be a bit later on (post 20 weeks). It's to do with the weight of your uterus putting pressure in major blood vessel . Can Disrupt flow of blood to baby and make you dizzy et.

You can lie back propped up by pillows etc and short periods of time are ok. Just would lie down flat

When I was doing obstetrics in my nurse training we were taught that heavily pregnant women should not lie on their back on a hard surface ( like the floor, it was a CPR workshop) because an artery that supplied the lower limbs could be compromised. I can’t imagine even the firmest of beds can do that.

18 weeks so aware I'm getting near the 20 weeks...

It's the blood circulation I'm worried about as it's hard to be aware of

Ah I'm always slightly propped up by pillows anyway due to heartburn/reflux. That's good to know

I’m 38 weeks and I spend a chunk of the night propped up on a lot of pillows, my hips can’t cope with being on my side all night. I know sleeping on your left side is best but I just do what I can. I physically can’t lie flat on my back without feeling really weird anyway so I suppose nature takes care of it to some extent!

Rememberallball · 05/06/2019 17:07

I’m 23 weeks tomorrow with twins and I still sleep on my back - I can’t sleep on my side and no amount of pillows stop me turning back onto my back.

ChrisPrattsFace · 05/06/2019 20:41

I’m the same Rememberallball, not with twins but got as long as I remember I’ve slept on my back. You can prop me up and roll me into any which way - I’ll end up on my back.
I’m 27 weeks, it does worry me but I guess I can’t help what I do in my sleep? When I wake I’ll roll to the side but I have no idea how long I’ve already been on my back!

I was going to ask the same question. I'm 37 weeks and have PGP so am in agony lying on my hips on my side and often wake up on my back so who knows how long I'm lying on my back for but I really can't help it as don't realise until I wake up Confused

DesperadoDan · 06/06/2019 17:18

I had no idea this was even a thing, I slept on my back with both pregnancies, I can’t sleep in any other position, towards the end of both I slept propped up because of acid reflux.

Hey mums! Quick but important question to ask!
This is my first ever pregnancy so everything’s scary, exiting and new. I’m currently10wks
Long story short I had just eaten a chicken korma curry from the local Indian I was half way though when I noticed that my chicken was a light pink! Now I’m in panic mode😂 what can or should I do? Will this harm my baby? I know google isn’t the best place for answers but I just need to know to put my mind at ease. Paranoid mamma over here😖

TillyMay you need to start your own thread, only people answering the lying on your back question will be on this one.

coral13 · 07/06/2019 09:02

Dr Hillary discussed this on TV. He basically said TRY to sleep on your side but if you wake up on your back, don't panic just go back on your side. I think if it does cause an issue it's more likely to be if you do it for a solid 8 hours each night, the odd bit won't cause harm.
