22 weeks labour what happens?

Does anyone know if an attempt would be made to stop labour between 22 and 23 weeks or would they not because of viability being at 24 weeks?

I believe they would try their best to stop labour from progressing.

Sorry posted too early. Some hospitals (but very few) may intervene if a baby is born 23+ weeks and is showing signs that it could possibly survive e.g. of they were showing signs of trying to breath themselves. But 22 weeks is sadly too early to help

Are you worried you are going into labour early?

I think there was a news article about the smallest known baby surviving and thriving when delivered at 22w very recently.

It’s very unlikely that a medical team will deliver a baby this early unless they have a degree of confidence that it will be safer and more positive an outcome than if it stays in utero. There are also medical interventions that mother can be put through as a first option.

I’ll have a look for some academic literature on survivability if you think that might help?

My first was born at 24+6, my second was also prem but not quite as early. I'm pregnant with my third and I'm ticking off the days until viability, I just had terrible stomach pains and thought "oh no what if this is it?".
I know that at my gestation they can't intervene with the baby but I wasn't sure if they would attempt to slow labour or because it isn't classed as viable they would just let the labour continue. I can't seem to find any guidelines of when to try and halt labour for a mother, I can only find intervention guidelines for a premature baby.

Hi yes i think they would try & do something, have u ever had a stitch put in your cervix ?i know some who gets this at 18wks when pregnant to stop labour .if u feel like labour is going to happen contact the hospital ,dont sit and wait.i think u should contact midwife have a chat about this.

I haven't had a stitch but I do have fortnightly cervical length scans to keep an eye on it.
I'm really anxious during pregnancy anyway so I don't like calling the midwife over every single worry, most of it is me being irrational. No more pains today so all good. Any more than two or three of those pains and I would go to hospital though.

They would definitely try and stop labour if they could but there’s not a lot that can be done other than certain medications to try and make the uterus relax. A cervical stitch only works if the cervix is opening but there aren’t strong contractions. Most units in the UK will not attempt resuscitation of the baby until at least 23 weeks because the chances of survival are negligible before then.

Fingers crossed your little one stays put, OP.
