Hi everyone.
I'm 31 weeks and suffering with a pouring nose and itchy eyes from hay fever. Has anyone been told anything about whether allergy tablets are safe to take?
Thanks!

I would have a check with your GP. some antihistamines aren't safe for use while pregnant so they will be able to give you eye drops etc which are safe x

Hiphopopotamous · 03/06/2019 20:06

I've been using the nasal spray instead which has helped nose and eye symptoms

Angelinthenightx · 03/06/2019 20:07

No u cant ,but think eye drops & nasel srays u can ,u would have to ask before u buy as some u cant use x

Smurfy23 · 03/06/2019 20:36

I've been using becodefence nasal spray and eye drops. Been working well

orangeshoebox · 03/06/2019 20:41

ceterizine or loratidine are usually fine.
or low dose steroid nasal spray if really bad (beconase or similar)

Rubberyduck · 03/06/2019 20:46

I have been using beconase which has worked wonders

AngeloMysterioso · 03/06/2019 20:48

I've been taking loratidine. I wouldn't survive without it, I get hay fever so badly!

goose1964 · 03/06/2019 20:50

If you go to a pharmacist they'll advise you
.

I’m on certizine all the time as have very bad allergies.
Doctor said it was fine, but I would check as you aren’t already taking it.

MrsRyan15 · 03/06/2019 22:08

I'm also 31 weeks and on a daily dose of loratadine prescribed by my immunologist.

I was initially reluctant to take it as it says on the box not to use in pregnancy but confirmed with consultant and pharmacist that it was fine for me to take at this stage.

Have also previously been given certizine earlier in the pregnancy.

That said everyone and every pregnancy is different so would check with you dr / pharmacist.

mynameiscalypso · 03/06/2019 22:09

Every pharmacist I've asked has said nothing is licensed for use in pregnancy but a GP can prescribe. That said, the NHS website is clear that there are several options and piriton, for example, is quite often prescribed in pregnancy for other conditions so I have no qualms about taking it.

Rarfy · 03/06/2019 22:10

I don't think they are but boots do a barrier spray which is safe. Just blows powder up the nasal passage.

Sessy19 · 03/06/2019 22:31

If you read the boxes before you buy them, it will say if it’s not safe in pregnancy. All OTC medicine has this...

Bol87 · 03/06/2019 22:59

You can def take some antihistamines in pregnancy as I was given some as a first line anti-sickness med!

I suffer badly with allergies & my doctor prescribed me loratadine in later pregnancy. Def worth a trip to your doctor as they can give you a prescription which is free!

(My doc used to tell me to come in & get prescriptions for any over the counter meds.. I felt a bit guilty doing it though!)

Sessy19 · 04/06/2019 08:31

@Bol87, every prescription is paid for at a stat prove by the NHS, so it costs you nothing, but it comes off your trust’s budget at £8 a pop. When you could buy the same medication from a supermarket at less than a pound. Doesn’t really add up when we hear how badly the NHS is coping with budgeting.... 😶

Sessy19 · 04/06/2019 08:31

Price* not prove

someonesmother · 04/06/2019 08:37

Thanks everyone. I'll speak to my midwife when I see her next and either see my GP or just ask in a pharmacy Smile

I have taken loratadine when its been really bad, on the advice of a GP. They said they will tell you to take it when the benefits of taking it outweigh the discomfort of not.

dementedpixie · 04/06/2019 09:03

The pharmacist is unlikely to sell it to you without a prescription but you can buy it off the shelf in the supermarket

Queenofpi · 04/06/2019 09:14

I had the same problem last summer. Pharmacists wouldn't recommend anything apart from saline nasal spray or barrier powder that you puff up your nose. My midwife wouldn't recommend anything either. You will probably need to see your gp.

dementedpixie · 04/06/2019 09:40

If yout feel happy enough taking them as per the NHS link then you can buy them in the supermarket without the need to see a gp or pharmacist
