Measurements at scan help

I had my 20 week scan and have been told that my babies femur bone is below the scale and in the 3% it's only just below the 'normal' scale and is measuring two weeks behind.. What are other people's experiences with this? I don't know if I should be worried or not

How tall are you and your partner?
I’ve known a few who had this said to them and they are all rather short.
So the baby is taking after them.
I agree that there could be a problem, but worth keeping in mind.

TwinkleMerrick · 01/06/2019 21:57

Not the same, but I had to see a specialist because they couldn't see all parts of my dd's heart. It was bloody awful wait, I had a whole weekend thinking the worst. In the end everything was fine, my DD is 1 year old and very healthy now. Try not to worry, I think the nhs are so thorough with these things they question every little thing. It's a good thing they are so thorough but leaves us on an emotional rollercoaster xx good luck

ohbabybabyy · 01/06/2019 23:19

@Em39ma I'm 5 ft 6 and partner is 6 ft 3 so we're not really short or anything, hopefully it's just nothing. It's just the not knowing if it's going to be an issue or not. Thanks for your replies x

What were the other measurements? If they are low as well then it’s probably just that the baby is small rather than anything significant. My baby’s femurs were on the 75th centile, everything else was 50th but he iust turned out to be a long baby.

ohbabybabyy · 02/06/2019 12:22

@Darkstar4855
Everything else was absolutely fine they didn't actually tell me the measurements of anything else, it's probably in my notes that I haven't thought to check

At my 20 week for DS he measured short legs, large head and borderline over for stomach measurements. Consultant not worried but was scary waiting to find out. He arrived, with a smallish head (me & DH have pinheads, long legs and a scrawny middle, he was long and very narrow!) so try not to worry-a lot can change and a few mm off in measurement can change the results hugely

3boysandabump · 02/06/2019 20:01

My youngest had the same. He just has short legs. It was quite worrying at the time though

ohbabybabyy · 03/06/2019 19:27

Thank you @Sweetooth92 and @3boysandabump
I'm trying not to worry myself as I know that won't help the situation

Hiya, I’m 24 weeks and couple weeks ago had a follow up to my 20 week scan as he wasn’t playing ball game first time! She didn’t give me exact measurements but at the end of the scan casually said ‘oh your baby seems to have short legs!’ I said oh should we be worried, she said no not at all he’s falling just below the average and it will be assessed again at the growth scan that I have in July. I haven’t been too worried as they didn’t seem to be xxx

SerenaOverjoyed · 03/06/2019 19:52

I had a measurement at the 6th centile at 19w, which isn't massively concerning but I was worried as me and DH are both very tall. We paid for another scan 3 days later and it was actually 30th centile. Did they offer to re-measure? Was it otherwise a difficult scan, i.e. wiggly baby/awkward position?

From researching a few months ago a small femur is a soft marker for Downs. This means that with own (i.e. no hard markers or other soft ones) there isn't a big risk and it is likely to be nothing. We asked our 2nd sonographer about dwarfism and she said that these babies are usually well below the centile chart.

That's my laypersons view based on a bit if frantic research earlier in the year! The best indicator of if to be concerned is what your clinicians say. Have they offered you any obstetric/fetal medicine apts, or another growth scan? I'd speak to my midwife and see what they say, just for sanity.

Rememberallball · 03/06/2019 22:03

I’m on the other thread linked to here. My 20 week scan showed small femur (6th centile) and abdomen (

ohbabybabyy · 04/06/2019 14:57

I had a call today to say the doctor wants to see me this week for another scan, he wants to scan me himself so I suppose I'll know more then.. I have no idea what centile is? None of the notes say anything about centile, it just says the measurements in mm and I remember the woman scanning me said it's now in the 3% so whatever that means.. just a waiting game now to see what the doctor says at my scan this week

So an update for anyone that may be interested and just want to write it out as I'm besides myself with worry..
So at my scan with foetal medicine it turns out that it is not just the femur length that is coming up small, it is all of the long bones (she said it's called short long bones) and also the abdomen. She couldn't get any measurements on the head because of the babies position. But I am 22 weeks currently and measurements are:
Femur length (FL): 32.3 mm
Abdominal circumstance (AC): 154.9 mm
Humorous length: 31.4 mm
Ulna length: 26.1 mm
Tibia length: 29.2 mm
All of these measurements are way below the chart of what they should be and am measuring weeks behind.
There is also problems with the blood flow to the baby and has said it could be genetics or chromosomal differences so have been booked in to have amniocentesis. She also said because of the blood flow it could be pre eclampsia so may even have to be induced early or it could just mean that the baby is going to be born small.. I'm so worried and don't really know what any of this means and until I have more answers I don't think I'll be able to relax..

Hi ohbabybabyy - my baby is also measuring small (femur & stomach), I have had a 20, 24 & 28 week scan and at all 3 the results are on the 5th centile. It is such a worrying time. I have an amniocentesis booked for Thursday. How did you find the amniocentesis & have you had your results?

Theworldisfullofgs · 24/06/2019 21:01

My dd measure with a small head and slightly under for dates. I got told off for being too busy. I was in a bit of a state.
She was 8lb when she was born and is now 5' 7". I was 10 days late and then induced. I was never convinced my dates were quite right.

Theworldisfullofgs · 24/06/2019 21:05

Sorry just seen your update. I know I'm telling you stuff you already know and it's really hard. Keep breathing and breathe some more. It will be hard to wait until the doctor sees you and they are probably the best person to give you answers.
Is there anyone you can talk to in real life?

ohbabybabyy · 24/06/2019 22:12

@Theworldisfullofgs @Sarahhoward
Thank you for your replies. I had another scan and the amniocentesis, it wasn't so bad I think I worried myself that it was going to be a horrific experience but it was actually alright with no pain really, just uncomfortable when the needle went in and a bit of cramping after but I didn't feel the need for painkillers after so was fine! I've had some results back, negative for downs, Edwards and pataus syndrome. Waiting for two more results which are things like dwarfism and not really sure about the others.
The abdomen had gone back onto the chart but the head is also measuring small below the chart. I'm now prescribed aspirin to help the blood flow to baby. I have to have scans every two weeks now to monitor the growth incase I need to be induced

That sounds like good news so far.

@ohbabybabyy Hi I'm in a similar situation now how did things turn out for you? X
