I’m clearly brewing a ginormous baby

So, I’m 36 weeks today (well, according to my dates I’m 35 weeks but doctors date me different)
I have gestational diabetes. Previous baby was 9lb10.
I had a scan today. Baby is clearly huge. It’s already 8lb and I have 4 weeks to go.
They told me to come back in 2 weeks to see if I need an induction.
I feel physically sick. I know growth scans are nortoriously unreliable, but it looked massive on the screen and the sonography didn’t even need to measure it before announcing it was big!
As if labour wasn’t scary enough, but the thought of a natural (well, induced) labour is making me feel sick. Apparently the shoulder may dislocate, the head may get stuck and there’s a high chance of tearing.
Don’t know what I want from this thread. Just having a vent

Can you request a CS, especially as you have GD and the birthweight of your first?

NeitherNowtNorSummat01 · 30/05/2019 15:04

He didn’t seem open to such a suggestion today.
Said, ‘we’ll see how labour progresses’

Are you obese by any chance OP? As that is a risk factor for shoulder dystocia. Only reason I ask if if so I’m surprised the midwives or doctors didn’t mention earlier about the possible complications and risks of labour if you got pregnant while being very overweight! If not then sounds like just awful luck :( I hope your birth does go smoothly!

On my 3rd I was going in every week from 36 weeks for scans as they said my DD was too small, every single scan showed a small tiny baby they said! I was booked in for an induction at 40 weeks exactly but my waters broke 3 days before induction! I gave birth to a 10lb 10oz baby! Doctors couldn't get over the size of her & how they were so worried!!

hi op how was your labour with your previous 9lb 10oz baby, as that's quite big and if you can do it once you can do it again! our 1st weighed 8lb 3oz so nobody expected that we would have a big baby but our 2nd born I had to be induced as went 13 days overdue and i ended up having an assisted forcep delivery because he had shoulder dystocia (both shoulders got stuck in my pelvis) with no pain relief as the pethadine had worn off and it was quite an ordeal.....he was born healthy and weighed 10lb 3oz and I'm a petit 5ft small lol... But he is now 5yrs old and we have since had another son who came 3 days early at 8lb 6oz and currently 12wk pregnant with our 4th so it didn't put me off! good luck x

Mine was measuring 8lb 2oz at 35+5, and he's been putting on half a pound a week since the 31 weeks scan so they estimate he'll be 10lb at 40 weeks which my doctor says is manageable and won't require a section.
My last child was 9lb 6oz when born at 38 weeks so I believe them with the size they are saying. No gd, just big babies.
I had a sweep yesterday at 37+5, and if there's no progress by next week I'l be booked for induction. They aim to get him out by his due date to avoid the risk of requiring a section.

I hate that they make you feel so worried. I'm sorry they've done that.

My first was 10lb 2oz and a intervention free, straight forward birth. This one is likely to be bigger and I'm still opting for a natural birth if possible (I'm nearly a week over due now). Big babies don't always mean difficult births. My smear nurse used to comment on how difficult it was getting the speculum in and that 'having a baby should be interesting for you' Confused but I managed it.

As others have said, sizing a baby is wildly inaccurate still. Can be out by 3lbs either way.

There are some good threads on here about positive big baby birth stories (search big or large or macrosomic baby). Lots of incredible women birthing 11lb-13lb babies with no problem (some even at home with home births!).

Our bodies can do amazing things.

My first was induced, and weighed over 10lb (the scan the day before put her at about 8lb...). It was pretty easy, and I didn't need any pain relief because it never felt sore enough for me to want any. How was your last birth? You can do this! Trusting your body will help- it's really tough to be given scary information without enough time to talk it through and understand. Can you talk to a midwife?
