Coming off Omeprazole

I've been on a dose of 1x 20mgs daily omeprazole since about 20 weeks. I'm now at 40 weeks and although the baby hasn't arrived yet I'm starting to look forward to coming off it. However, I've found if I miss a dose by accident then I can feel pretty sick (sometimes have been a bit sick too) and the heartburn comes creeping back. I've done a bit of googling and it seems to be common to get 'rebound reflux' for weeks after stopping, which sounds awful.

Has anyone managed to stop once they've delivered with no side effects?

Ask GP for a lower dose, to gradually come of it. :-) Thats what GP has said x

Yah I am on this but it's more of as and when I need to be now, where's in previous years I was just on it all the time. I was talking to the dr about it and he said if your on it all the time and suddenly come off it, it can cause you to feel unwell again. My advise is to speak to your dr and see what they say! Maybe you can be given a lower dose to help?

I had the same thing. But once the baby was here didn't have any such problem... As if by magic. Didn't believe it will happen, but it did

Could you switch to ranitidine as a transition? I'm led to believe it's not as effective so that's why it's cheap and easy to get over the counter, I know you can get omeprazole over the counter if you pay a fortune for it but still....

Might be a good halfway house to take ranitidine twice a day initially then dwindle down to once and use gaviscon to back it up, then wean off each gradually?? Best to get medical advice of course but just a thought 🙂

You will need to taper very slowly, possibly combining with Ranitidine for a while, to avoid the rebound.

You can get a pill cutter to help with this and/or dissolve in water and use a syringe to gradually reduce the dose. The GP or pharmacist can advise, though I would caution that GPS are usually very gung-ho about fast tapers, and you may find you need to go down a bit more slowly than they suggest. It's totally doable without any symptoms, provided you don't rush it.
