Do I need a double pram?

Dc1 will be about 28 months when dc2 is born. Was planning on getting a buggy board with a seat on it but now wondering if I will need to get a double pram. Any advice or experience welcome.

Following as DD will be 32 months when DC2 is born. She is a good walker though so I’m thinking buggy board hopefully.

TrotEsio · 28/05/2019 21:19

28 months?! 32 months?!

Soooo... 2 1/2 and almost 3? Hmm

DD1 was 68 weeks when DD2 was born, I didn't need a double buggy, but DD1 didn't use the buggy much after she turned 2.

TrotEsio · 28/05/2019 21:21

Posted too soon.

I always made sure I took the sling out with me though, for if DD1 was tired and did need to use the buggy.

If you think you will need a double then get one that easily converts back to a single.

I had a 25 month age gap and managed with a sling for the baby and the toddler in the buggy when I thought they might need a nap and the baby in the buggy and the toddler on the buggy board at other points. It wasn’t long before my toddler was fine on the buggy board most of the time - but she did drop her nap fairly early. If you do need a double then you may be able to pick one up fairly cheaply from a local Facebook group if you have one near you? And if you aren’t used to using a sling then you may have a sling library near you to show you some that are good for newborns. Good luck!

2 year gap & I had a double with baby at the back lying down with toddler sitting at the front. We used it daily in the first 9 months or so but I suppose it depends how much walking you're going to be doing. I wouldn't have been without it as buggy boards are only really good for short distances. Keeps you fit pushing it up hills though!

All of my friends have a two year age gap and all have double buggies.

We have a 21 month age gap and ended up getting a double when DC2 was about 9 months old. I'd managed with a sling / single and a buggy board until then (moving DC2 out the seat and into the sling when DC1 wanted a sit down / a nap) - but DC2 just got too heavy for me. DC2 also developed a habit of kicking DC1 when he was on the buggy board which didn't help
..... I got a side by side double 2nd hand and we've got loads of use out of it for days out and because it's quite a long walk to preschool / friends' houses. I carried on using our single plus buggy board for short trips around town.

How far do you walk? A friend has a buggy board with a seat and her DD isn't that keen on it, I don't think it's particularly comfortable - so I don't think it would be great for long walks.

Depends how much you walk and if you want to get places by a certain time. My two are pretty lazy so I used a double daily until the eldest was over 3 and could scoot 2km reliably.

tumtitum · 28/05/2019 22:14

We got the Uppababy Vista which can be a single or double. Used it as a double a handful of times. DD1 was 2.5 when DD2 was born. Initially DD1 still napped in the buggy until she dropped her nap. I used sling lots in the beginning and still take it with me as DD1 not always the best at walking. She hated the buggy board at first but is getting more used to it now.

Teddybear45 · 28/05/2019 22:18

Depends on the child. My nephews are 3 and don’t need a buggy at all - used to walking. But at the same age my neice, who is a lazy sod when it comes to walking, needed it.

TooMinty · 28/05/2019 22:19

23 month (or almost 2 years to appease Trot!) age gap and I managed with a wrap and single pram with buggy board. But my older one gave up naps quite early, does yours still nap?

Scarletrose18 · 28/05/2019 22:21

Thank you for all your replies ladies. 🙂

I drive most places when I need to get somewhere for a certain time but I do go for walks recreationally and would walk locally with dc1, also he has most naps in his pram atm but I dont know if this will still be the case when dc2 comes along.

Mine are 25 months apart, I was at the store with dd2 in the front carrier, dd1 in the buggy buying a double one when dd2 was 10 days old! My older dd was not compliant at walking! (She could walk really well in the countryside). Though she was later diagnosed with autism

Sugarhouse · 30/05/2019 23:46

My little one is due 2 months after ds turns 2 really hoping I don’t need a double we have no space in our tiny house for one and getting round shops is hard enough with a normal pram

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 30/05/2019 23:51

1 1/2 year gap here- I bit the bullet and bought a Phil & Teds Dot, which is a great option if like me you don’t want a massive tandem travel system or side by side.

I always have the second seat in the boot of the car, but most of the time I have dc1 in the buggy and dc2 in a cheapy Chicco baby carrier that I got in Mothercare for £20. Works well.

Following, thanks OP. x

22 month gap here, youngest is now 7 months. We have just been using our stroller with baby in the sling. However, toddler is now walking everywhere, so I put baby in stroller ( taking sling for back-up).

SinkGirl · 31/05/2019 06:24

I have twins and doubles are a pain in the arse - they all have their issues (if it’s a manageable width, it’s really heavy, if it’s light it’s too big for car boots without taking the wheels off etc) and you do need to careful as some double buggies aren’t suitable for under six month olds so you have to get ones for with at least one lie flat seat or carry cot option.

What would work for you is going to depend on what you drive, the width of your hallway, if you often use buses then just don’t do it!

21 months between my two and I’ve got a double. They are now 9 months and 2.5. I’ve found it really useful when I walk to our local supermarket. DS1 walks there but once inside I can pop him in the pushchair, means I don’t need to push DS2, hold a basket and man handle DS1. He then walks back home and I’ve got somewhere to put the shopping bag.

I’ve taken it a few times on days out to NT places when he’ll be doing lots of walking and sometimes needs a rest. A buggy board wouldn’t work for us because I’m 5 foot and he’s very tall.

I’ve got this one and love it

Thank you so much for all your replies ladies. That was really helpful.

I think I will try a pram and sling as a few of you suggested to start off with and see how that works, but if I find I need it, I will have a look on gumtree for a double one.
