Consultant appointment - asking for a C Section

I have my first consultant appointment this afternoon - referred because of a neurological condition and also a PPH with DD.

I am 15 weeks and really am hoping for a C-Section as I feel that labour is going to trigger my condition (its more painful that childbirth, if that is even possible!).

I've never been in this position before; do I just ask for it outright? Wait for it to be offered? Am I likely to have to fight my case?

Just wondering if anyone has any experiences.... thanks Smile

Ask for it outright, I think the sooner you ask the better.

I wanted a section with my first due to anxiety about birth, it's why I'd put off having children for so long. First mentioned it at 24 weeks and signed the consent form 2 weeks ago at 34 weeks. I really didn't have to fight too much for it, I have HG and GD and with the GD they said I'd likely need to be induced. When I said I really didn't want to be induced they said I could have a section of I wanted. You have medical reasons so should be fine getting it signed off but if they seem reluctant the NICE guidelines say maternal choice is a reason for section now.

It would depend on other risk factors. For example if you are obese or have other conditions that may make c-sections dangerous (or could get them). They may ask you to be open about it in case it would be healthier for you (or baby) to have a vaginal birth.

You're perfectly entitled to ask. The consultant will probably be happy to discuss it with you

I'd asked my midwife in advance who had mentioned it to the Consultant so she was aware before the appointment. She had to run through the risks with me (although I already knew them) but then booked me in.

You ask outright but prepare to be up for a fight. I asked for one with my last birth and they placed every obstacle possible in my way, I had to convince four different consultants that it was right for me and the consultant just before we went into theatre even tried to talk me out of it! That was after two traumatic births including a huge PPH... They just didn’t want to hear it. C-section went perfectly, couldn’t have asked for a better or more positive birth really.

Make sure it’s what you want, go armed with facts and stand your ground.
