Hi all,

Joined up to hopefully gain as much knowledge as I can as I'm pregnant for the first time in my life (came as a shock at 36 I tell you now! Lol)
However, once that shock went I'm now ecstatic and also scared out my wits!
The doc thinks I'm currently 7 weeks (which pretty much tally's up in my head too) and I've started the terrible morning sickness Confused
I'm not the biggest fan of ginger biscuits, so can anyone recommend anything else to help settle my tummy?

And also, I've been told I am not allowed antihistamines and I am clawing myself to death itching Cos of my hayfever and allergies... is there really not any that are safe in early pregnancy? Or even a homeopathic alternative?

Any advice will be appreciated as a first timer... I'm doing the worrying thing so much i just want to get a bit further along and know everything is ok x

Thanks,

Louise

I can't stand ginger biscuits but there's a lemon and ginger tea (think it's twinings) that I could tolerate that really helped. Also, dry crackers as soon as I felt a pang of sickness, I carried then in my handbag too, both of those really helped with my pregnancies.

Rhiannon87 · 28/05/2019 07:52

Hi,
I've struggled with sickness from day one. (Even before I knew I was pg but put it down to my IBS).
Ginger biscuits and gingery things I've grown immune to, likewise Peppermint. Dry toast, plain crackers, rich tea biscuits too.
Im off to the gp later because after a nasty dose of d and v this weekend Ive run out of solutions and am struggling to keep fluid down.
If I get any more tips from GP I'll let you know. Welcome to the shocked and preggers club 😊 its fun here - we all feel like crap xx

Hi OP, congratulations! Just wanted to let you know that there are some antihistamines you can take in pregnancy, but only under the supervision of a dr and you won't be allowed to buy them over the counter. I'm currently taking piriton x 3 daily for an itchy skin condition I get in pregnancy (I can relate to the clawing yourself to death Sad)
I've discussed this with a GP, an obstetrician and a dermatologist and they're all in agreement that piriton is safe to take in pregnancy. The only thing is I didn't start taking it until the second trimester (not sure if that makes a difference). I would get yourself a GP appointment to discuss this. Good luck!

WoogleCone · 28/05/2019 08:15

Congratulations!

GP for antihistamines, they'll assess your individual circs.
My midwife recommended those travel wrist bands for sickness too :)

PrayingandHoping · 28/05/2019 08:38

You are allowed nasal sprays and eye drops. I asked my midwife last week. Pharmacist then was happy to give me some. Any tablets need to come through doctor

Cbbr · 28/05/2019 09:50

I take promethezine (Phenergan) for sleep. It’s also widely prescribed for morning sickness so definitely ok to take. There’s a warning about use in the 3rd trimester causing agitation to baby but other than that my gp is happy to prescribe it.

MsSquiz · 28/05/2019 09:55

When my morning sickness was at its worst, I was drinking sparkling water and lemon and ginger tea with honey. I also made ice lollies from lucozade sport for the days I couldn't stomach any food and ordered these queasy drops, they really help stop the nausea feeling when I'm out and about. I also spent 3 days nibbling on digestive biscuits rather than ginger biscuits

Littleguggi · 28/05/2019 10:01

I had severe sickness in the first trimester and the only thing I could keep down were ice lollies (calypso ones I think)! Congrats!

mrsk28 · 28/05/2019 10:01

Hard boiled sweets are good to suck on when you're nauseous. The only other thing I really found helped was to make sure you eat regularly to not get too hungry.

shirleyschmidt · 28/05/2019 10:05

Mento mints! Easy to take and instant nausea relief!!

NoMoreFastCars82 · 28/05/2019 10:14

Thanks all for the congrats and brilliant advice and ideas!

I may have to go get everyone's suggestions and see which works best Grin

I'm trying to eat little and often as opposed to big meals so I keep myself from too many hunger pangs... and I've been on a weight loss regime for god knows how long so getting used to more than 1200 calories a day again is fun!

I'm find the sickness more heaving than too much actual sick but the nausea is immense from about half 7 til 11ish of a morning and I usually try and stomach a banana and ginger biscuits, strong decaf tea and my new pregnancy vitamins.

I'm so glad I found this place!

Also has anyone had an 8 week scan? Mines 9 week as couldn't fit me til 5th June, but it's more for me finding out if my doc is correct on how long. I'll admit I wasn't sure About the pregnancy when I found out initially (had split with partner, but this has got us back together and stronger than ever)

Congratulations.

I am 38 with first pregnancy 😲 nearly 8 weeks & not being seen by midwives until 14th June which will be me just over 10 weeks. Like you shocked in an understatement but really happy.
Not had the full sickness but just feel nauseas most of day, finding boiled sweets are helping when I feel yucky.

NoMoreFastCars82 · 28/05/2019 14:10

Congrats to you also, and all the mums to be who have commented... sorry I suppose I am very much still trying to get used to all this lol Smile my doctor was 39 on her first she told me, so I felt so much better her telling me that and that she was the bread winner so she never did find 'the right time' like I didn't. Apparently fate plays its part and just does it anyway lol!

I know what you mean on yukky feeling, but it's the sudden dash to the toilet and then just heaving that's annoying... I think I'd rather just throw up and get it over with lol.

Acid indigestion the last 2 days also.
I'm awaiting all the perks that must be coming haha!! Grin

Congratulations and sorry you're feeling crap!

Try taking your vitamins later in the day - I didn't twig straight away but mine were making me feel even worse so started taking them before bed.

nespressowoo · 28/05/2019 14:54

Hi OP! Congratulations! I'm pregnant too - third time but only have one DS. Haven't been hit by sickness yet. But I found keeping hydrated with water helped.

Re antihistamines, I recently saw my GP as I get horrendous heat rash in the summer and normally take Fexofenadine. He was happy for me to continue to take this throughout pregnancy Smile

NoMoreFastCars82 · 28/05/2019 15:34

I must admit I am loving some of the usernames on here, I thought mine would look random but it appears I fit in well lol Grin

Didn't think about the vitamins but I'm wondering if taking them last thing could help so I'll try that tomorrow, thanks.

Hydration as well, I'm drinking so much water it's unreal Cos I do feel quite thirsty compared to normal. Have got some of the Ribena infusions with kiwi too as that's water and has vit c in and tastes lovely Smile quote good thirst quencher if anyone is looking for something different.

Congratulations @NoMoreFastCars82
I struggled with nausea too, first thing in the morning was bad for me so I was advised to keep a little tub of dry cereal next to the bed, a few mouthfuls of that before I even sat up helped keep the sicky feeling at bay. I also found that forcing some food down really helped, maybe it will work for you too :) good luck! I also used the pressure bands too which helped but they're tricky to hide at work especially as it's warming up...worth a try though.

I'm 14 weeks now and am pleased to say I'm feeling a lot better!

Also, I spoke to my midwife about antihistamines and she said that they're not recommended as they can mask other serious conditions (I can't remember for the life of me what it was called, something to do with being itchy?) but she said that if I was suffering and felt I needed something to make an appointment and they'd run a blood test to check that it wasn't this other condition. And if all clear then antihistamines would be ok. Just thought I'd mention it!

NoMoreFastCars82 · 28/05/2019 17:28

Thanks @Hayesdays

I'm starting to wonder about this itching with a few people mentioning it so I'm gonna see my doctor again tomorrow and see what she thinks.

I'm so pleased to hear you're 14 weeks and feeling better... I'm kinda wishing it to all go a bit quicker so I can stop worrying and also wake up and not want to talk to the loo anymore Grin

Having just had a wonderful(not) stay at my local hospital - I'd make sure you drink more than you ever thought you would need.

Morning sickness related dehydration is not fun. Good luck ladies - hope you all feel better soon xx

NoMoreFastCars82 · 29/05/2019 10:19

@Rhiannon87 oh no! Glad you're on the mend but I imagine that was an awful experience and hospitals are boring as well which doesn't help.

Going to get another drink now you've said that x
