What do I need for newborn?!

FTM and starting to look at what I need (due in 10 weeks). Know what pram we are buying but nothing else bought!

Planning to combination feed if possible. Any recommendations would be great (I know babies don’t actually need that much!)

Clothes, boobs, bottles, nappies, somewhere to sleep... You don't need much else Smile

Also, read up on the concept of the "fourth trimester" to get an idea of normal newborn behaviour. Reading about responsive breast & formula feeding may help too

I found must haves from my first:

Baby bouncer
Play mat
Travel system
Prep machine (formula fed) + bottles and cold water steriliser
Nappies (Aldi are great value)
Wipes
Nappy sacks
Bodysuits
Sleepsuits
Rompers (heatwave when your is due .)

For you :
Pads
Comfy clothes
Boob pads

Hmmmmm......

Oh yeh we used Moses basket for two weeks, then into the cot as he was a wriggler.

Baby monitor...

carly2803 · 27/05/2019 20:57

as above!!

adding to that which i found helpful - grabby foods, (finger foods), big glasses of juice/water, magazines or a phone (while feeding - yes its lovely at first but if you are there a while!)

for the actual baby - cot/pram/muslins(a fair few)!, bibs as they get bigger,
I recommend a swing too or bouncer. Tons of nappies and wipes. Thats it really - they dont need a lot!

Less baby clothes than you imagine! Personally I would but 1 week worth of vests and baby grows and then wait until baby is here. Make yourself a wish list of clothes then order once you know how big your baby is. Saves a lot of money on wrong size clothes. Also you will be gifted some.

Muslins are so useful for covering while feeding, wiping up mess, swaddling, covering from sun etc.

I loved having a stretchy sling to carry baby. Especially if they have a lot of reflux. Means you can still move around/go for a walk while keeping them upright and happy.

Comfy pants and feeding tops for you! Maybe fill your freezer too so you don’t have to cook.

For baby - clothes, muslin cloths, nappies and wipes, half a dozen bottles and teats, possibly a microwave steriliser, somewhere to sleep, cot, bassinet, in with you. They really don't need a lot at that age apart from you. On that note you might want to consider a sling.

For you, extra long phone charger cables wherever you plan to sit and feed, so you can mumsnet while you feed lol, a box of snacks in the same place, I liked cereal bars, protein bars and chocolate biscuits, a travel mug with a lid to keep your drink hot and non spill, a water bottle which keeps water cold, nipple cream and pads, paracetamol, handcream Headphones so you can watch a movie on your phone at 3am if you wish, and a small soft night light for feeding in the night.

Don't forget Amazon prime means you can shop as you go even after birth. I'm due in 5 weeks and have bought:

  • a few sleepsuits
  • some babygros
  • socks, hats and mittens
  • pack of nappies
  • stuff for me - nursing bras, maternity pads etc
  • car seat
  • pram
  • snuzpod
  • muslins
  • wrap/pappoose

And that's it really. I know we need much more but not sure what we'll want, so just going to shop as we go.

I was all about the lists with both of my children! Here is what I used, take from it what you will :)

x Moses Basket OR Cot + Sheet for Mattress + Baby Blanket
x Car Seat
x Changing Mat or Area
x Thermometer (The strip ones usually are easier)
x Bottles (Self-sterilizing ones by MAM are good and then no need to fork out extra for a Sterilizer unless you want to)
x Powder Formula or/and Pre-Made (Pre-made milk for when in hospital as they will not make powder formula up for you)
x Nappies/Wipes (LOTS of wipes)/Nappy Bags
x Babygrows and Vests (about 3 - 6 of each)
x Socks/Hat/Scratch Mits
x Muslins

Other optional things include:
x Baby Bath + Newborn Baby Wash + Hooded Bath Towel
x Dummies
x Grooming Set (Hair Comb or Brush + Nail Scissors)
x Baby Monitor
x Baby lotion (Aveeno is brilliant or a natural oil such as coconut or olive for babies skin)
x Changing Bag
x Storage for all babies new things/clothes etc.
x Sling
x A light projecter or baby rattle or something small of the sort
x A couple of outfits

Hope this helps in some way!

Hi op, just wanted to say don't forget to arrange the stuff you have in a way that'll make your life easier once baby is here.

What I mean by that is with all your nappy changing stuff (wipes etc) have it all in 2 handy baskets (1 for upstairs and 1 for downstairs) so everything you have is altogether. Don't forget a full outfit change in each box in case of poo explosions!

Get all your breastfeeding stuff (snacks for you, muslins etc) in a basket and put it by the sofa! There are some great YouTube videos about what to include in your baby / breastfeeding basket if you need inspiration.

The last basket I'd recommend is a postpartum basket for your bathroom. Include pads, nappy sacks for used pads if you want (not for everyone but what I did in the early days) and an empty sport cap plastic bottle for help with weeing (you can use it to pour luke warm water on your bits as you wee - this tip saved my life in the first 2 weeks!).

Good luck! Thanks
