I tried with 1st but soon realise that it just isn't practical.

If I'm at home I'll make it an hour before and leave it to cool. If I'm going out, I'll make it fresh and leave it in the change bag until needed. Never normally left over a few hours.

I use the Hegen bottles and find they keep the milk insulated well, keeping it warm for a long time.

I have 3 DCS, aged between 8-26. Pre-made 6 bottles (and more) every day with all of them. And they have grown up just fine!

Mumoftwox · 26/05/2019 23:48

do you just make them and instantly put them in fridge? thanks

I premake morning and evening feed. The rest are made fresh with a flask if out or kettle if at home. I have a bottle of cooker boiled water so if making a 5oz bottle, I use 3 boiling and 2 cool and it's perfect temp.

Mumoftwox · 26/05/2019 23:57

@yermawyabas love the name made me laugh lol, thanks. never knew you could do this sounds much easier will try that so boiled water and add the cool then the 5 scoops of powder? thanks

So put powder in, add some hot water and shake well to kill potential bacteria in the powder. Top up with cooled, boiled water to the correct quantity. Check that it isn't too hot.

You can also pre-make the feed and put it in the fridge (up to 24h I think). General guidance is not to microwave it. However, it's quick and safe provided you shake it well to make sure the heat is evenly distributed + check that it isn't too hot (or cold).

You can also get the Tommy Tipee perfect prep machine if budget allows. Makes life easier.

@Mumoftwox

Thanks Smile

Boiling water first, all the scoops of milk, swirl and then add the cooled boiled water.

Save yourself the trouble and get a Perfect Prep machine. Best thing I ever bought. It takes no time to make up a bottle and it's already at the right temperature.

Thattwatoverthere · 27/05/2019 00:22

And congratulations btw!

yermawyabas · 27/05/2019 00:51

I bought a perfect prep. Bottles were too cold for my dd so back to the old way.

Lucylou321 · 27/05/2019 00:57

I got a perfect prep for 20 quid off Facebook market place and it's been a life saver!

You're not supposed to put boiling water straight on to the powder. It breaks it up in some way. I can't quite remember how, but you're supposed to let it cool to 70° (about 20 minutes after kettle has boiled).

I know it's no longer NHS/midwife advice, but plenty of my friends did it and their kids are fine so I'll be doing the same - making up one day's worth of bottles, letting them cool, then refrigerating. Never leaving them longer than 24hrs in the fridge.

Do you actually want to breastfeed? If you're happy with formula then great and I think other posters have answered your questions. If you still want to breastfeed try contacting Wendy Jones at the Breastfeeding Network - she's a pharmacist specialising in drugs in breastfeeding and likely to be able to work with your doctor to find a solution so you can breastfeed, if you'd like that.
Congratulations on the new baby!

I thought you can make up the bottled water and refrigerate but then add the powder before a feed? It's been a few years for me since I had a baby to feed but I used to fill the bottles before I went out with boiling water and then the right amount of powder would be in a powder dispenser. By the time baby needed a feed I'd just tip the powder in, shake and temp would be about right.
Failing that I'd have a flask and just heat up pre made milk from a carton of out.

I'm planning on getting the prep machine for this one as I've heard it's a game changer

JoJoSM2 · 28/05/2019 19:07

Kgeal, from what I know, you can do that for older babies but little ones need water at 70 degrees + to be added to powder to make it sterile.

The prep machine is pretty useful but it can be a bit faffy too. I enjoy using it but when I go away I don’t really miss it.

kgeal3 · 28/05/2019 21:32

@JoJoSM2 oh ok, I breast fed when they were tiny babies x
