Holiday abroad when 28w pregnant

agteacht · 26/05/2019 13:56

Hi all

Looking at holidays in September, likely Malta, when I will be 27-28w pregnant.

Wanted to see what people thought - is anyone currently about 28w and if so how would you feel about a holiday abroad then? Or for those who have done it themselves recently!

This is my first pregnancy to this stage so I don't know what 7 months pregnant feels like!

The holiday itself will be pretty relaxing, villa accommodation, no big excursions etc. It's more about whether I'll feel comfortable. We could look at holidaying in the UK instead, just wanted a trip away before our lives get turned upside down... Smile

Thanks!

Go for it. I've done long haul twice when pregnant around the same dates as you and it's been fine. It's the nicest time to go as the sickness has stopped and it's before you get big and uncomfortable. Enjoy :)

mynameiscalypso · 26/05/2019 14:06

I'll be 28 weeks on Thursday and we're going on holiday on Friday! Sounds like a similar kind of holiday (villa in France) albeit we'll also be with my parents for a bit. I am seeing my midwife this week to get a fit to fly note because the airline require one after 28 weeks. We also booked business class flights so we had a bit more space and priority boarding etc. I don't think we actually need the latter to be honest but it will be a nice change! Physically, I feel absolutely fine. Still don't really feel that pregnant to be honest so I'd have no qualms about booking if I was you. That said, everyone is different and we booked in the knowledge that we might change things closer to the time but we were happy to take that risk.

rosyedith · 26/05/2019 14:20

I think you'll be fine at 28. I personally wouldn't go anywhere after 30 because it's just exhausting x

Bambamber · 26/05/2019 14:25

I went to Malaysia at 32 weeks pregnant. It was absolutely amazing, would do it again this pregnancy if we had the money

violetrosie · 26/05/2019 14:26

I felt great at 28 weeks and would have been totally happy to travel - but then gave birth 3 days later! It was a healthy pregnancy with no reason for the spontaneous labour. I know it's unusual, but just to say it does happen x

Cosmogirl86 · 26/05/2019 14:30

Personally I wouldn't. I'm 26 weeks and tired constantly. All I really want to do is rest. I couldn't bear the thought of airports, travel, socialising and being away from home. But I am carrying twins and my pregnancy has been complex

bluedoor4 · 26/05/2019 14:30

That happened to me too. My first pregnancy and waters broke and I delivered DS at 29 weeks.

They still don't know why!

It's unusual but does happen, I wouldn't worry too much but make sure you have very comprehensive travel insurance?

DameSylvieKrin · 26/05/2019 14:34

Get travel insurance that will cover you if you. I was told at my 20 week scan to remain within 20 minutes of a hospital for the rest of the pregnancy, which meant that I couldn’t fly. You won’t want to lose the money if this happens.

combatbarbie · 26/05/2019 14:37

I done mexico around that time, was fine and actually tanned my legs (usually does not tan at same rate as my body)

agteacht · 26/05/2019 15:09

Thanks for your views! Lots of food for thought... I am worried I will be exhausted like you say @Cosmogirl86 - but then that might be just because I'm exhausted now at 12w... how I don't know!

Can't believe two of you gave birth at 28/29w! Now what would be unexpected!!

Yes, AND baby if you deliver abroad. Not all policies automatically cover baby too.

TokenGinger · 26/05/2019 15:18

By 28 weeks, it wasn't so much tiredness that would have been hard for me, but comfort when travelling. I went to the cinema around this time and I was so uncomfortable in those seats and there's much less space in airplane seats.

Also consider the risk of PGP. I couldn't enjoy a holiday now with the PGP I have and there's no saying if/when it will hit.

agteacht · 26/05/2019 15:40

@TokenGinger I'd never heard of PGP 😮

@agteacht It's absolutely delightful, I can assure you... 😩

Honestly, it's a bloody awful pain. I'm at a point now where walking is quite painful and I cannot sleep without a pregnancy pillow supporting me. I'd definitely be stuck on holiday without my pillow! I guess it depends what kind of holiday you like, though. DP and I love to go walking and exploring, whereas others are more than content relaxing by the pool - I could definitely do that right now x

Maddis136 · 26/05/2019 16:34

I’ve just got back from a week abroad and I’m 35 weeks. Being tired on a beach was much nicer than being tired at home!

I just drank loads of water and sat in shade if needed. Didn’t do excursions and took snacks/ back pillow for the flight. Was lovely. And this is my 2nd baby so I’m not exactly small and had a toddler. Well worth it.

Grab your last flight without a child while you still can!!

RoseReally · 26/05/2019 16:38

I went on holiday at 33 weeks in my first pregnancy, and just back from holiday at 30 weeks with my second. Both fine for me. This time harder as have a two year old to look after! Holidays are not the same omce you have kids (in my experience anyway) so I would recommend going and relaxing/ enjoying as much as possible!

ShesABelter · 26/05/2019 16:55

I went abroad at 28 weeks with my second and was absolutely fine. We went to Turkey so it was roasting but I was okay. Just get a letter from midwife of doctor saying how far along you are incase the airline asks for prooff and take some breast pads. For some reason my colostrum leaked much more in the night not sure if it was because of the heat or what but stopped when home again..

agteacht · 26/05/2019 18:19

Thank you all
The conclusion seems to be to go ahead and book! I will take out insurance now as well in case anything happens that means we have to cancel
Any insurance recommendations do let me know!

I went to Greece at 27 weeks, returning when 28 weeks. Flight was 4 hours and I was totally fine. Be prepared to take a fit to fly letter (midwife will sign it) but check policy for your airline. Ryanair have their own letter and they were checking mine at every point. We had a very chilled holiday and didn’t do excursions or anything like I normally would. It was perfect and relaxing !

Also make sure you have good travel insurance as most don’t cover everything. I recommend Ravenhall, they have a pregnancy package and I included my husband on it. I say book !

VaselineOnToast · 27/05/2019 20:55

Yes, do it! Just find out where the local hospital is, just in case. I studied in Spain for 2 weeks when I was at a similar stage of pregnancy, and my partner joined me for the second week. It was a lovely holiday - the last one with just the two of us!

agteacht · 17/06/2019 22:27

Thanks @BellaNutella88 and @VaselineOnToast

I booked and also got insurance with Ravenhall :)

@agteacht yay! Enjoy your holiday !

Lexyness · 18/06/2019 11:59

I went to Holland when I was 28 weeks pg (a month ago) but we drove because I haven’t been allowed to fly from my first consultant app!
I also went to Egypt on a Nile cruise 12 years ago when pg with my eldest! I had severe spd requiring weekly physio, crutches and a wheelchair - but dya know what - I damn well enjoyed myself! You get so much extra help at the airports etc and a lift up onto the plane, I managed the flight without too much discomfort, tricky getting on and off the boat more than anything and couldn’t do all the excursions I wanted but I don’t regret it for the world!
Go and enjoy yourself - you can relax while your there! x

Starstruck2020 · 18/06/2019 12:19

I personally wouldn’t, as as a midwife I’ve looked after overseas visitors who’ve had pregnancy complications whilst on holiday.

It is very expensive. And can be difficult to get home, especially if you have the baby (sorry, But you did ask for thoughts)

If you do go like others have said make sure you have adequate travel insurance

Megan2018 · 18/06/2019 12:25

I’m 28wks Thurs and although having an easy pregnancy there’s no way I’d want to be anywhere warm as the heat is horrid with puffy ankles and also I just want my own bed right now. I have no desire to go anywhere at all tbh!
