Water wipes? Expensive gimmick or better alternative?

As the title says really. I'm going to try and cut down on my baby wipe usage at home (for environmental reasons) but I will use them whilst out for hygiene and convenience. I used regular baby wipes of all brands on my others but have noticed water wipes becoming popular, are they kinder to baby's skin? Or are they just a gimmick? X

@Doubtoftheordinary

They are no different to an old flannel. However I had no old flannels so got myself some cheeky wipes instead.

It’s fine to use a new flannel Grin

SparklesandFlowers · 25/05/2019 16:07

You can use flannels but a) Cheeky Wipes are smaller and b) they're sewn around the edge (overlocked) so won't fray. But my husband just calls the CWs "flannels" anyway as he sees no difference Grin

They're easy to use out and about - put in a waterproof drawstring or zip bag fresh from their container (that has water in), after you've used them put them into a different bag. When you get home, chuck them in the machine. Easy and no need to be near a water source, as a pp believes! You can get bags from the CW website but if you don't want to buy theirs I'm sure you can find something similar.

We really like them and they're so good for cleaning. One friend I have recently admitted to using 7-8 single-use wipes for every nappy change; I could have cried at the waste (1 or 2 is far more reasonable if you're using them).

I use Water Wipes to remove make up and never find they dry out in the packaging. The only problem is they do bunch together so two come out at the one time. Probably useful if you have a wriggling baby Smile

Like a pp said, cheeky wipes are over locked so don't fray and I got 25 for about 15 quid. Flannels would have been about the same price and probably frayed so would have had to buy more.

Itwouldtakemuchmorethanthis · 25/05/2019 17:23

I’ve never had a flannel fray. They are bigger though.

Teachermaths · 26/05/2019 07:31

They fray when cut into smaller parts.

I've got a discount code for Cheeky wipes if you end up going down the washable wipes route!

firstimemamma · 26/05/2019 07:45

I used cotton wool and warm water when ds was a newborn (and every so often even now)

In terms of wipes I swear by water wipes, I love them!

Planning on buying some reusable wipes for home use soon though, to try and reduce my waste.

Itwouldtakemuchmorethanthis · 26/05/2019 08:23

Ah I see @teachermaths. I think if I was going to cut them up then a hand towel would probably be cheapest, and blanket stitch would stop them fraying or something more jazzy if you own a sewing machine. I bought flannels and some cloth wipes when I bought my cloth nappies, but I’m more aware now so would probably opt for cutting up something we have already. All methods are better than nappy wipes, which smell horrible and go nowhere.

Teachermaths · 26/05/2019 08:32

No sewing machine here so opted for cheeky wipes. Also I have no spare towels either. I live a minimal life!

I cloth bummed too and will be doing it again. Can't wait to get those little newborn nappies out again!

Pinkvoid · 26/05/2019 13:16

They’re awful, they’re far too wet.

I use reusable wipes.
