Underactive thyroid

Hey ladies,

Just wondering if any of you suffer from an underactive thyroid and if it affected your pregnancy at all/how much did you have to up your thyroxine dosage.

At the beginning of May, my consultant said I should up my dosage of thyroxine as my levels had gone a bit low. She said I would need to be monitored every 4 weeks with regular blood tests to make sure my levels stay in a safe range for baby and have extra scans at 28, 32 etc.

When I went back 4 weeks later I saw a different consultant who said upping the dose had brung my levels back into range and she didn't want to see me until 28 weeks (was around 18 weeks at the time). I asked if she is sure as the previous consultant said it was important I had it checked every 4 weeks and she said she's sure.

I feel a little fobbed off if I'm honest and it doesn't sit well with me that my thyroid levels won't be re-checked for another 10 weeks when they can change so quickly. I feel like she really rushed the appt and wasn't really too interested. I also feel like I'm getting some symptoms. Is it best to go to my GP and ask them to check my levels?

The same thing happened to me, I was initially getting my levels checked every 4 weeks but at 18wks the consultant said she was happy not to see me again until 34 weeks but I had to ask my midwife to take the bloods for a thyroid test at 28weeks, she said there is no point in having the test every 4 weeks.

To be honest I usually know when my levels are getting low and since being pregnant they have come down because I am on a slightly higher dose so I was perfectly happy with that care plan.

If you aren't happy I am sure your GP will run the tests for you if you book in for them or if you suspect your levels are getting low,

I didn't have any additional scans but I know other ladies who have because of an under active thyroid. Did they mention anything to you about those? Xx

Thank you! I think I will follow up with my GP just for peace of mind! I normally know when my levels are off too .. however last time I really had no clue and was surprised that they were off!

I had my 20 week scan today and all is well with baby so that makes me feel a lot better x

My levels were actually optimal before I got preg and now at ten weeks they're out of whack again! I've had my dosage upped by 25mcg and was told to expect regular tests :(
