Cant bring myself to drink anything - 6 weeks pregnant

So I posted a little while ago asking for drink suggestions but I am really struggling. Second pregnancy, but same problem. The nausea starts to kick in and i literally cant bring myself to drink anything. And I mean water, tea, squash (the absolute worst) I have to force myself to drink obviously to stay hydrated but its literally forcing myself so I get upset and feel very sick at the thought of even trying. Last pregnancy I would end up in tears just contemplating having to drink fluids. Has anyone else experienced this? I had this for the first half of my last pregnancy and was praying I wouldnt get it again 😞

My sympathies :(

Have you tried sucking on ice cubes or an ice lolly? I found that very soothing and distracted from the nausea, and gets a bit of liquid down you..

Teddybear45 · 22/05/2019 21:37

Ice lollies? Fizzy drinks? Lemon squash? Fruits such as melon / watermelon?

MsSquiz · 22/05/2019 21:38

When my sickness hit its epic low a couple of weeks back and I couldn't eat or drink anything, I made ice lollies using lucozade sport and they worked for me.

Maybe try ice cube, ice lollies or sorbet?

Kanga83 · 22/05/2019 21:40

Yes I had hyperemisis. It was horrendous. Have you been to see your GP for medication? As much as I didn't want to take anything it literally was a life saver. Can you manage a frozen lolly or frozen grapes? Anything that will become liquid (although I know it's hard, I was vomiting violently from sips and ice cubes).

MyBabyBoyBlue · 22/05/2019 21:48

I had hyperemesis too and ended up rotating flavoured vitamin water, ice cubes and ice lollies. I could only stomach a small quantity of each before the sight made me nauseous but having them on rotation helped slightly. Also found that (weirdly) using a straw helped with being able to take very small sips of liquid.

Teddyreddy · 22/05/2019 21:48

It's horrible isn't it, I had this in all pregnancies, with it progressing into hyperemesis in my 3rd. Are you still managing to drink enough to wee regularly? If not, I'd go and see your GP as you don't want to get dehydrated in pregnancy - medication can really help with the nausea.

Things that helped me to varying degrees were putting lots of ice into very concentrated squash, iced fizzy drinks, drinking through a straw, kids ice pops (sold unfrozen in the dessert section), drinking cold milk and eating fruit and veg with a high water content (e.g. cucumber). I also found how much I could drink varied by time of day - I'd try and drink as much as I could at the good times of day to balance out not really being able to drink at all the rest of the day.

Wallabyone · 22/05/2019 21:52

I found that if it was ice-cold and through a straw it was slightly easier. I ate a lot of calippos in my first pregnancy where I had terrible morning sickness all day. Ice-cold melon and watermelon were also ok in tiny morsels. Good luck x

Kanga83 · 22/05/2019 21:55

I also remember eating fridge cold oranges in wedges in both pregnancies. I tried (and failed but hopefully you'll manage it) freezing ice cubes of smoothies and sucking on those throughout the day.

SpiderP · 22/05/2019 21:56

I could only drink ice-cold carbonated water when I was pregnant, even still water tasted disgusting and everything else turned my stomach. It sounds horrible, hope you feel better soon.

Kanga83 · 22/05/2019 22:04

Also please do see your GP rather than suffering alone.I had cyclazine but when that didn't work they added promethrazine and then metoclopromide. I had IV's too plus and iron infusion before the right combination was found towards the last trimester.

Gettingonabitnow · 23/05/2019 08:24

I really feel for you, I’m in a similar boat not being able to stomach water. I’ve been drinking premium cans of fizzy pop - you know the fancy pants artisan stuff, because they are a bit interesting and take my mind off the fact it’s a drink. Also the fizz helps refresh my mouth.

We have a thread on here for those struggling with morning sickness with their second child - come on over if you’re struggling x

MeredithGrey1 · 23/05/2019 10:51

I agree with the suggestions to see your GP, you need to avoid dehydration. I was on cyclizine and it worked well for me.

I also ate a lot of calippo ice lollies, and some quite sour lemonade ones from tesco because it was much easier for me to eat them than to drink. If I did drink, it had to be ice cold and then it was easier to sip.

Is eating causing you as many problems as drinking? You could try fruit that is high in water e.g. melon. Its quite bland and watery so if you can stomach it it might help keep you hydrated.

DaisyMay25 · 23/05/2019 11:12

I'm the exact same, I'm currently 8 weeks
I've been to my gp for meds, went back yesterday and they said luckily no ketones are present or I'd have to go straight to hospital. My heart rate is high indicating that my body is struggling. I've been signed off work for a week, but will probably be another one after. I've got a phone consultation tomorrow because they don't want me going on because they want me to rest.
Here's everything they recommended:
Ginger biscuits (try eat some 20 minutes before getting out of bed)
Crystallised ginger (I'm not a fan)
Sea sickness bands
Glucose tablets
Ginger tea
Sip of water, gulps with make nausea worse.

Hope you feel better soon x

YesQueen · 23/05/2019 11:25

Try
R whites lemonade ice lollies
Ice cold bitter lemon with ice cubes!

Rubberyduck · 23/05/2019 20:08

Thanks all I am going to try some of your suggestions. It sounds ridiculus but I am often scared to try something in case it backfires. And last pregnancy I spent a fortune on boxes of tea and squash that I sipped and then didnt touch anymore. But i need to do something. Its unbelievable how pregnancy affects you. It doesnt help noone except DH knows I am pregnant but he he just doesn't get it. He just tells me I am dehydrating and just need to get it down me Sad

No, the 'get it down you' method will back fire. Hyperemisis doesn't work like that. You need little sips and often, smaller sips than you would think but frequently, and it doesn't have to be water. Fizzy cloudy lemonade (san pelligrino) was good for my first pregnancy, couldn't stomach with second, anything that 'cleanses' the mouth- the sour and bitter tastes were slightly more palatable.

In the toddler aisle they sell Kiddlicious freeze dried fruits- strawberries and banana and blueberry. Literally just little freeze dried melts that dissolve, might be worth trying.
For the ketones, that is a sign of dehydration and your body metabolising. (I have a child with a glucose and ketone monitor). Again, food that becomes fluids can work wonders, orange segments, frozen grapes, sorbets, frozen kids yogurts, miso soup (the saltiness was good for me), mints to suck to keep your glucose up too. If you do need IV's though, they'll probably give you extra anti sickness through the drip and you'll get to sleep for a day or two straight (that was my experience).

lovebeingmum9 · 25/05/2019 17:33

it's awful and I'm in the same boat for the 4th time! struggling to drink much if anything and mainly whatever I do try to drink comes back up fairly soon after.....I'm dreading the 12 week scan next week for obvious reasons but also because I'm normally sick in the car journey up because of the water I've had to drink!

Marty93 · 31/05/2019 20:06

Hi, I can sympathise with you, OP!

I am 8+2 today, and in my 6th and 7th week I was worried I was getting dehydrated because the nausea literally stopped me from wanting to eat / drink! The only thing that seemed to help me was flat Diet Coke (not great for the teeth!).

But now I seem to be able to keep water down and I am so relieved lol.

I also found ice pops helped.

Hope you start to feel better soon.

X

Marty93 · 31/05/2019 20:07

Oh and another thing that really helped me was sugary wheetabix with loaaadss of cold milk. It is helping with my sickness too! X

amehh · 31/05/2019 20:31

I was exactly the same up until about 11 weeks, I tried to force some water down every day but I went from a regular 3L a day to less than 500ml. I think it actually made it worse as I was then really dehydrated. I managed to get ice lollies down (only orange ones - spent a fortune on them!) And diet coke occasionally. I think just make it through with anything you can, mine did end and I'm back on most fluids now except hot drinks. In fact, the colder the better. Maybe adding ice to drinks might help as well.

Hope you feel better soon!

JP79 · 31/05/2019 21:58

I am struggling with the same issue. Have gone off ALL drinks and cannot find anything that takes my fancy to quench my thirst. Water turns my stomach but even weak squash seems to taste far too sickly sweet at the moment.

I have however found a drink this week that I can stomach and it was from Sainsbury's - it's watermelon, cucumber & mint sparkling water. Ice cold with ice cubes and it seems to be doing the trick.

Gettingonabitnow · 01/06/2019 06:53

How much are people actually drinking? I’m averaging about a small bottle (500ml) of fizzy water per day. I’m done in with it all.

ButtercupGirI · 01/06/2019 07:01

Sparkly water was the only drink I could handle on my third child pregnancy.

Rubberyduck · 01/06/2019 07:29

Thanks all. I had a few days I could drink sainsburys lemonade juice drink (it's a juice carton in the fridge aisle). Finished it last night by having to hold my nose and felt so sick after. So I guess thats off the list. Still havent been sick but I feel so much worse this pregnancy compared to DC1. And I cant help thinking I am only 7+4!!! I am dreading going back to work next week SadSad

Ice cold water with a tiny dash of cordial, use a straw and sip little and often.

The cheap Mr Freeze Ice poles you get a box of 50 for £1 I used to have several every day, the flavour on them is really weak so it's not too overpowering.

Blue slush puppies - for some reason they really helped me! Gives a little sugar hit which you will need if you aren't keeping much down.
