Preventing a peanut allergy while pregnant

Hi all,

One of my siblings' children has a serious peanut allergy - neither my partner or myself have one. My sister suggested I eat loads of peanuts in my pregnancy as this will help prevent the baby from having a peanut allergy.
Anyone know how much nuts I'm supposed to eat? Does this even work??
I actually don't really like nuts, only salted peanuts and smoked almonds. Other nuts make me want to hurl, especially now with hyperemesis! Envy

Any advice appreciated Smile

I doubt this is proven. Its not that long since they advised the opposite. Frankly I don't think they have a clue on allergies. I'm a life long nut allergy sufferer. I obviously didn't eat nuts in pregnancy. My ds doesn't have it or any allergies as far as I know thank god.

There is a allergy doctor thread (probably in site stuff) where you can post questions for a live chat on Thursday.

I don't think they know what causes it yet. I know I ate peanuts and my sister didn't and we both have anaphylactic dc.

Don't fuck about trying to sort this out yourself is my advice.

Have a look at the LEAP study: www.leapstudy.co.uk/.

There are no guarantees, I’m afraid. There certainly isn’t enough evidence to warrant forcing yourself to eat foods you hate when you have hyperemesis.

There is no history of any food allergy in either of our families and I ate lots of nuts when pregnant and breastfeeding. DS still has a peanut allergy.

Thanks @Mumteedum.

Yeah it seems a bit wishy washy online alright. Meant to ask my obstetrician at my 12 week scan but was so delighted that all was ok with baby I forgot!

Another thing to worry about Smile

My niece has a peanut allergy a d a lot of both dh’s family and mine suffer from psoriasis and hayfever. My MW advised that I avoided peanuts in pregnancy. This was hell since peanut butter on toast is my standard breakfast! FWIW, my dc are now 7 and 10 with no allergies.

Thanks guys, seems like there's no concrete answers on this.
Weird that they don't have any conclusive research done on this, isn't it? Considering how serious this can be and all ...

Will phone the hospital tomorrow and will follow their recommendations.

my mw said how likely a child is going to get a severe allergy depends on whether there are cases of severe allergy (even if it’s asthma or hayfever) on both sides of the family. Even then unless you yourself are allergic you shouldn’t avoid any types of foods.

In India where childhood allergies to nuts are very rare, doctors typically encourage introduction during the weaning stage (as ground powders or butters mixed with milk). It’s also very common to see 6 months old snacking on home made cashew / peanut / almond butters.

I think the current guidance is to not avoid peanuts during pregnancy. But when I asked my dietician about allergies and food during pregnancy, she said there simply isn't enough known about in vitro exposure and allergies.

I didn't avoid anything during pregnancy but my daughter still ended up with 3 allergies, one of which is severe. I had these things frequently in pregnancy. Neither me nor my husband have any food allergies, or any in the immediate family.
