Hi all,
Booked in to have my section tomorrow making our way for 11am as electives are booked for afternoon just me and someone els, think I have everything ready hospital bag, snacks, notes etc...
I'm just nervous most of all for the sighting of the spinal block I did ask if I could have gas and air as I get quite nervous they said ask on the day the anesthetist said he hadn't had a patient need it in his 20 years so a little reassuring I guess it's just can I keep still?... Any advice?
Thanks for reading

Will it be your first spinal?

I’ve had three now. First two times were post or during labour so I was already out of it and couldn’t give a shit. Last time was for an elective section so more aware of what was going on. It isn’t comfortable at all, especially with a big bump in the way. All I can say is to hold your OH’s hand as tightly as you need to or a nurses if not, whoever is closest. They gave me a pillow to hold onto as well which helped. Talk to the nurse if you need to or find something in your mind to otherwise focus on. Deep breaths, it’s usually over and done in no more than five minutes and that’s the hard part done.

Good luck, you will be fine Flowers.

I had a c-section with my first and due to have another soon. The spinal block was the thing I was most freaked out about.. I really hate needles. But I honestly didn’t feel a thing. They numb the area so well that it all went by so quickly and painlessly.

Hasn’t stopped me dreading it this time but I just keep reminding myself what a calm experience it was the first time! Good luck for tomorrow!!

TrixieFranklin · 19/05/2019 18:42

The worst bit (for me) was trying to sit still enough and in the position they wanted for them to do it! I was in intense labour though with twins and bloody huge Blush
Good luck!!

Bees1 · 19/05/2019 18:51

Good luck! Spinal block is honestly completely fine and doesn’t hurt at all, I got some sensation down my leg as it went in which they hadn’t warned me about but when I mentioned it they reassured me it is entirely normal. My elective section was honestly a lovely experience.

Rarfy · 19/05/2019 19:17

I had a csection under general and had the spinal done before being put to sleep. I honestly never felt it. Was very surprised as I was a bit worried about it but I don't even remember feeling a scratch or anything and it was only 4months ago.

Good luck. Have you packed some peppermint teabags?

Keep on top of your pain meds after and I don't know what caused my infections but do your best to keep the area clean and dry when dressing comes off.

TokyoSushi · 19/05/2019 19:26

I've had one, it was 'ok' not the most fun you've ever had, but not totally horiffic either.

I absolutely loved my ELCS, good luck OP, this tims tomorrow you'll have your lovely baby! xxx

Otter46 · 19/05/2019 19:28

Don’t worry about it! It’s a little sting and then done. Just listen exactly to what they say to do, both times I’ve had a cushion to bend over and my DH was on a wheely stool near my ankles so he held my hands. Once it’s administered you’ll prob feel a cold sensation sliding down your body, quite strange! They get you to lie down almost immediately once the spinal is in before you lose control of your legs. And then get ready to meet your baby :)

Lauren83 · 19/05/2019 19:29

Mine was fine, I was distracted as there was loads going on, I did end up getting sedated after it and before the section as I have really bad emetophobia and was convinced I was going to be sick once I was on my back so I'm the end they offered me sedation. I'm in for another section next month so going to ask for the sedation again

Parttimewasteoftime · 19/05/2019 19:31

ELCS I had two lovely births this way as said they numb the area and honestly couldn't remember pain. Did get the shakes but felt fine surprising how quickly you regain feeling was wiggling toes in post op last time. You will be fine OP I remember a midwife said to me not to worry as I had all the staff in the same room! Two Dr's a student two midwifes and a HCA love the NHS.

DownstairsMixUp · 19/05/2019 19:32

Mine didn't hurt at all tbh, the cannula was worse being put in! Good luck xx

Strongecoffeeismydrug · 19/05/2019 19:35

I've had two c sections and honestly the spinal block feels just like a scratch.
I've also had a natural birth and believe me I'd choose a section over natural any day.
Pack some peppermint cordial would be my advice as you get wind trapped in the most strangest places after a section lol ( shoulders) and Bridget jones knickers so the scar doesn't rub.

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 19/05/2019 19:40

Ask for your partner to be there holding you? They would never have got the spinal in with my 2nd emcs if my husband hadn't been the one holding me (I wanted a general anesthetic and was essentially guilt tripped into trying a spinal). I found it made a huge difference and really helped us both. I think our local hospital are thinking about making it standard now so definitely worth asking.

Her0utdoors · 19/05/2019 19:40

I've had two during labour. I'd swear they inject a local anaesthetic first. The weird bit is the anaesthetist apologising in advance that he might see a bit of nipple when he spays cold stuff up your body to check you are the right amount numb. I would have preferred an apology for the suppository or the rummaging around in my vagina, but hey ho.

OohItsTheSoundOfThePolice · 19/05/2019 19:45

Mine was fine. I've had 2 sections. The first was an emergency so had to try and sit still during contractions - didn't notice any discomfort from the spinal.
The second was elective - it was a dream, all round a lovely experience. The spinal was fine (and so much easier not being in labour!) they'll give you some local first which stings a little (but in the grand scheme of things is nothing) and tbh I was so excited to be meeting my baby soon and relieved to be having there birth I wanted I don't even particularly remember them putting it in - it just became so insignificant. You'll be absolutely fine, I'm sure you won't need gas and air at all - they're very quick at getting them in. By the time you've got the hang of using it, it'll be in.
Good luck tomorrow.
(Get the anaesthetist to take pictures of the baby being delivered if you think that's something you'd like - I did and have the most amazing pictures, so pleased I asked)

Youwanapizzame · 19/05/2019 20:59

Nothing spinal related (although that was fine 😁) get fybogel and OJ, drink it straight after. No one needs to strain after that. Best advice I was given

HabbyHadno · 19/05/2019 21:07

I had an emergency section last week, they gave a local anaesthetic that stung for a second before they put the spinal in and I didn't feel a thing when they did the spinal block. Good luck and try not to worry too much. The whole experience was fine.

Flamingosnbears · 19/05/2019 21:45

Ahh thanks for all the helpful advice really appreciate it 😊

New841 · 20/05/2019 03:25

Good luck tomorrow! I'm booked next week so please let us know how you get on!

BusterGonad · 20/05/2019 05:01

I had one with my extremely premature son so I can't comment on tugging pulling and all of that as he was so small I didn't feel a thing, the actual injection was fine, the only bits I didn't like was when I felt really sick during the procedure (low blood pressure?) but that was soon sorted with some medicine in my IV tube, then after when they moved me to a bed and I couldn't feel my legs, I just felt really venerable and that they'd drop me, silly really as of course they wouldn't! The immediate recovery wasn't all that nice as I felt so sick during the first few hours, I was actually sick all over myself, it wasn't until the next morning that I stopped feeling spaced out. But with saying all of that I certainly would have another if I was giving the option.

BusterGonad · 20/05/2019 05:59

And good luck for today, you will be fine, it's all worth it.

TrixieFranklin · 20/05/2019 14:38
