Second baby - what do I need?

I am 31 weeks with my second. I had my DD 2.5 years ago so I still have her car seat and her cot, a vibrating swing, sleep pod and bouncer and I candy pram. I’m not sure what else I need, and hoping the car seat will still be ok to use. It’s been cleaned and I still have the newborn insert, will this be sufficient?

I have bought a new tutti bambini cozee next to the bed crib this time as an extra as I plan on bf again and think it will be easier.

I plan on reusing the cot as my daughter is getting a bed soon. So everything will be cleaned and ready for when DS needs it. My other question is do I need to get a new mattress. We spent a lot on my daughters mattress it was the best one in mothercare, anti allergenic and all that. It’s also protected with plastic so it wouldn’t be difficult to clean. Can I reuse it or is it still considered a SIDs risk? I don’t want to dispose of it unless it’s dangerous for a second use. It seems such a waste. Or could I reuse it later when babies SIDs as decreased and get a cheaper new one for the interim. I’m really lost Confused

Thanks!

I think the official guidance is new car seat and new matteess for each baby.

However im sure plenty of people reuse for their 2nd baby.

Its up to you how comfortable you are that the existing matress is clean and in good condition, and that the car seat meets latest safety standards.

Rosie16 · 19/05/2019 11:32

The car seat is the new standard one. It’s isofix and also fits the pram. Not been in any accidents, as I know if it has it cannot be reused. But I know people sell car seats on so didn’t think I would need a new one?
It’s had a deep clean etc it’s the cot mattress I was worried about mainly.

I would resuse the mattress. Especially since it hasn't been stored away in a dusty attic and has been well looked after.

bearface45 · 19/05/2019 15:20

Personally I kept the cot but got rid of the mattress, was also an expensive one with covers. Even though it he risk is small I would rather be safe than sorry

Rosie16 · 19/05/2019 15:25

Yes bearface45, agree. I said this to my hubby. He’s going to be in the new crib next to us for as long as he fits. So will bide some time. By then my daughter will have had use of the mattress for 3 years.. not bad all considered. Will prob just get another mattress and stop being so cheap haha Blush

I never heard of getting a new mattress for a new baby. I borrowed one for a short time and the mattress had had at least three other babies use it. As you say you only need a new car seat if the old one was in an accident. Double buggy?

Rosie16 · 19/05/2019 15:58

Pipandmum, no need for a double buggy. My daughter is a really good walker. She hasn’t used her pram for 6 months now. We’ve just been to the Eden project and she walked all the way from the car park, round all the grounds and back. She’s brilliant. So doubt I would even use. Double buggy. Are buggy boards worth bothering with or just a bit of a novelty?

As far as I’m aware there is no need to get a new car seat as long as it hasn’t been in any accidents and meets current safety regulations but the official guidance is new baby, new mattress. This is what I was told by my midwife. I’m currently 30 weeks with my second child and DD1 will be 2.5 when baby is here. We’ll be buying a new mattress.

Lullaby trust says that the link between sids and used mattresses is when they're brought in from outside of the home, so used mattresses between siblings is fine. I also believe it's more to do with how they're stored?

someonesmother · 20/05/2019 13:32

We're in the same position in that our daughter is currently using the cot and will transfer to a bed in time for new baby (due August) to have the cot. I won't be changingtaking the mattress. As a PP said, I think it's only if the mattress has been stored for a while, or if it's second hand.

We've hardly bought anything for the new baby and I don't plan on getting much before she arrives. A new storage unit so I can split the toddler and baby clothes, but that's it.

You might want to consider a carrier of some sort, will be very useful if you already have a little one to chase after. We had one with the first baby and loved it!

I think the official guidance is new car seat and new matteess for each baby.
Is it?
Why new car seat if stored properly and why mattress if stored clean and dry in your own home?

Blondiejay24 · 21/05/2019 21:00

someonesmother have you tried any of the baby slings? I like the idea of the material wraps that you can use to baby wear. My daughters very lively so I won’t be able to just put my feet up like first time around. So many on the internet i don’t know where to begin.

londonliv · 21/05/2019 21:17

As I understand it is new mattress but you can reuse the car seat. That is what we have done. We also bought a next to me crib this time & a perfect prep machine.
