Stupid question about ante natal appointments and employers

I'd rather not tell my employer early on, but I'm going to have to, aren't I? The midwife at my GP practice only offers appointments during hours I have to be at work. There isn't a way round it, is there?

OP posts:

Just that I am telling them before I feel comfortable and happy with telling them, I don't want to tell them until I know everything is ok after 23 weeks. Them not knowing causes me zero issues, causes them zero issues and I have no issue going to as many appointments as I want. Like I said before, it's a non issue for anyone involved.

It causes you 0 impact but for people who don't have flexibly in their jobs, they may need to tell their work and I just wanted to be clear that obviously their pregnancy isn't at risk if they do

moomin11 · 19/05/2019 18:22

The OP doesn't have flexibility though so I think people are giving advice on that basis.

I told my work early on as secure employment and had had miscarriage before that for which I needed time off for hospital appointments so Cat was out of bag already re TTC. Everybody has to weigh up what’s best for them in their own circumstances. Work based pregnancy protections only kick in when you tell your employer... but then problems and discrimination etc are more likely to begin then (but it may well begin before then due to suspicion in which case you have the worst of both worlds). Some people don’t have secure employment or think it would be counted against them for promotion etc. The OP mentions promotion in her posts.

If you think work are likely to be inappropriate about it then could you look at your diary, reschedule the appointments then book leave?

I wouldn't tell them yet. Tell them you have a medical appointment and if they suggest making the time back up say "yes of course" but don't do it. Once it is public you can tell them it was a pregnancy related appointment and you won't have to make the time back up.
