For those that already have children, do you buy a new stroller?

So I have two kids already. We have the icandy. It was used a lot, 3 hours a day of walking for like 3 years! So its worn to the ground I like to say. Basket underneath has a hole, handle bars broken (but can still be used and probably fixed), wheels are also worn, so might need to be replaced. I assume this would cost a few hundred total, still cheaper then buying a new stroller. My mom insists I should just buy a new stroller. What does everyone else do? We can afford a new one and my mom has kindly offered to pay, but I am wondering if that would just be a waste.

No it’s not cheaper than a new pram / pushchair. Some are only £50-£100. It may be cheaper than a new designer pushchair tho

Flamingosnbears · 16/05/2019 14:44

It's up to you we decided we wanted a new one being in a similar situation to you, you can pick up a decent stroller for a couple hundred rather than faffing repairing for it to potentially break again.

Mamabear12 · 16/05/2019 14:48

Teddybear45 ah yes true, but if we bought a new one, we would buy something similar - iCandy or bugaboo. Or maybe just the yoyo zen, as that is a travel stroller and maybe the only one we need.

Flamingosnbears which one are you going for?

We are...but our current buggy (the bugaboo bee) was given to us by a friend, and was three years old at that point, and we have then gone on to use it for another 3+years. It has been a solid pushchair and I would recommend the brand to anyone, but it’s come to the end of its pushing life.
We are going for baby zen yo-yo, a few friends have it and it looks fab!

Mamabear12 · 16/05/2019 14:59

NorthernRunner I have been told that the yoyo is amazing by many. Do you think that is all you will need? As lots buy it as a second travel stroller, but my friend did say she thinks that is all you really need and if she did not have the two young kids, she would only be using the yoyo. But she has two under two so needs to use the double stroller from bugaboo. I will use the stroller LOADS because we do not have a car and basically walk everywhere. I guess I have my answer, I will definitely buy the yoyo, but wondering is that all I need or if I need a bugaboo/icandy with carry cot as well. If I was in the USA (where I am from) I would not think like this, because they drive so much, but living in London, I seriously walk so much and the strollers get so much use.

I also live in London and don’t drive so use public transport a fair bit. My dd is 4.5yrs now so she walks or goes on scooter, so yes I think we will just get the yo-yo. We have a sling too for when baby is tiny x

Foxmuffin · 16/05/2019 15:16

Our travel system was a handy down. We can afford it we just aren’t extravagant people and couldn’t justify the expense for something used for such a short period.

I’d get it repaired but that’s me Smile

Kaddm · 16/05/2019 15:17

I would not think a stroller is really designed to go through 3dc. Even if you spend the money to fix it, hundreds, then other parts might break as you start you use it more. I’d take up the offer of a new one which will have some sort of guarantee with it.

Gillian1980 · 16/05/2019 16:04

If it was in good condition then I’d reuse it, but if I was going to spend out either way (fix or replace) I’d probably just buy a new one.

We got a £100 graco travel system which we used for a year, stuck in the shed for 3 years and have just got it cleaned up ready to use again. It still looks in really good condition so I wasn’t worried.

JassyRadlett · 16/05/2019 16:10

We had the icandy peach - the handlebars broke but were pretty cheap (£40) to replace; John Lewis ordered the replacement parts and replaced them then and there when they arrived so we weren’t without pram. I think the basket is also a pretty simple one to replace? I’d be surprised if it cost you more than £100 total.

It was pretty scratched (we had to keep it in the car in a gravelled car park with DS1 so it got pretty battered) but was as much of a dream to push after 2 years of DS2. We also had the babyjogger city mini as nursery pram which was great but for the early years having a pushchair that was really nice and easy to push, get up kerbs, good basket for shopping etc etc was so important to me as I walked a lot.

In your shoes (which I was!) I’d get the repairs and then get a lighter travel one for when the baby is older/for short runs/travelling.

mumtobabygilrl · 16/05/2019 16:23

You can get icandy second hand great condition really reasonably too. We got our peach 2years ago and it's been fine for our two

Marty93 · 16/05/2019 16:33

Mothercare do lovely prams / strollers for around £200/£300. Significantly cheaper than an icandy or silver cross, for example. And I think they have a deal on at the moment where you get a free changing bag included. I personally would definitely buy a new one, especially if someone was offering to pay :)

Sunshinegirl82 · 16/05/2019 20:09

I think in your position I'd get something like the yo-yo and, if you can run to it, get the iCandy fixed too. That way you've got options!

cheesemumma · 16/05/2019 21:46

Unless it can't be pushed, please stick with what you've got. Baby merchandise is crazy, it will all just end in landfill, makes me sad.

We're on our second, and the only thing we have bought is a sling- because ours got lost in a house move. You don't NEED stuff. Just depends what you want.

bearface45 · 17/05/2019 07:54

I intended to use the same one, now at 14 weeks and cannot resist any longer - going to be buying a new travel system! But i’ve Kept loads of other stuff I will use again so it’s a little indulgence

kelly14 · 17/05/2019 08:47

I have silver cross wayfarer which I will keep hold of and use sometimes but As my baby is only 14 months, I am going to have to get a double pram, which I don’t like thought of as they all seem bulky and awkward!

Mamabear12 · 17/05/2019 10:32

bearface45 I fully intended to just use my old iCandy peach, but now I am thinking of buying a bugaboo. I kept lots of old clothes so I can reuse those (I've got one of each, so will have everything). But I just feel like I used our last stroller so much and its so worn, that I should just get a brand new one. It would def cost a few hundred to repair, but I think its better to just get a new one. We can afford it, and heck my mom is even offering to pay for it. I do not buy myself expensive clothing or handbags, so the way I see it, yes its expensive, but its the only expensive thing I would have bought for a while (besides an iPad). Some women drop 400 on a pair of shoes or 1000 on a bag.

kelly14 we had to get a double pram when our second came along, which is why we got the iCandy peach. It converts from single to a double. But some prefer side by side and go for the donkey bugaboo.
