Foods they say not to eat

How strict are you?

I gave up the chance to eat the most delicious beef tartare recently. Well i did grab a bite actually, not very much, just to find out what i was missing each was a hugely delicious meal, ugh!

And no blue cheese, or sashimi or smoked meats. Literally all my favourite things. God, I could do with i nice plate of sashimi right now. And i can't even have smoked salmon! Sad

How good are you? I'm not talking about alcohol. Personally but bothered about that. But... The thing is I like my steak blue and now i have to have it more cooked. I settle for medium as completely cooked through you might as well just not eat it.

Beef taretar isn't something I eat often enough (sadly) but mmmn delicious especially with a nice raw egg yolk on top.

And decaff tea is just blergh. Maybe I just haven't found the right blend yet, but blergh.

Just having a moan. Anyone else find these food restrictions hard?

I was pregnant over Christmas with Dd and missed Pate, alcohol, blue cheeses all the good stuff so as soon as she was born I went to Tesco and stocked up!

This time round I have been to paris and when I asked to have my meat cooked through the waiter through daggers at me Blush

It’s tough, this is my last pregnancy!!

Once never really believed the risks of we dying these foods as massively high. But if anything WERE to happen i don't want to sit there blaming myself for eating something someone said i shouldn't.

The risks of contracting listeria or toxoplasmosis are tiny, but the stakes are incredibly high so I follow the NHS guidelines fairly strictly. I might have caved at amazing steak tartare though!

Your midwife sounds a bit out of date so I would definitely check out the website - some things have changed since I had my first baby and that was only 3 years ago!
I love all the restricted stuff so make sure I have salami in the freezer and have baked Camembert regularly so I don't feel I'm missing out too much.

I was more strict in the first trimester, making sure eggs weren't runny, meat was cooked all the way through, no soft cheese, cured meats etc. Although I still didn't stick to it 100% as I ate sushi once. I was eating smoked salmon though because that's fine in the UK.

In second trimester I started to ease up a bit... Since then I've went back to having medium rare steaks, runny eggs, cured meats, and even had some liver last week too (just a one off with the liver). I'm now 32 weeks and I don't think there's anything I don't eat now.

I think the risks are much higher in the first trimester, and I chose to personally ease up on the rules after that. But in the end, it's up to everyone to choose what they're comfortable with.

Aimily · 16/05/2019 11:20

I've followed NHS guidelines, however still drinking tea, just not the 7+ cups I sustained myself on pre-pregnancy.

I have also slipped up, wasn't paying attention while shopping a couple of weeks ago and ate brie, but it was in a panini so had been cooked and was piping hot while eating.

I think, as long as you're comfortable with what you're doing, do you, like many people have said they did stuff and their babies are fine.

Angelinthenightx · 16/05/2019 11:21

Ive given up everything all the nice cheese, pate, salami, sea food, peanuts just to be safe , just read not to go to buffet places so that too. Its hard but its not for long
Also i read somewhere not to eat melon never heard that before, im sure every year alot of food /things get added, seems like we cant eat or do anything while pregnant.

dementedpixie · 16/05/2019 11:28

salami, sea food, peanuts - these are all fine btw although salami should be frozen first or cooked and sea food should be cooked. Why give up things you don't have to?

dementedpixie · 16/05/2019 11:30

Who is adding these extra foods because it's not the NHS?! Cooked brie is fine as is sushi too

Newyearsameoldshit · 16/05/2019 11:34

Also runny eggs in the UK are fine now as long as they have the lion stamp.

purplemama1990 · 16/05/2019 11:52

@Angelinthenightx You may have got different advice, but I'm sure the NHS recommend to eat peanuts during pregnancy as that's what my midwife told me. She said there's "some" research that eating peanuts while pregnant could help prevent a peanut allergy in your baby. But I'm sure peanuts are fine anyway, even if they don't have the benefit of preventing allergy!

Also seafood is completely fine There's some limitations on tuna because of its high mercury levels, but even then you can still eat something up to 2 or 4 cans a week or something like that.

TrixieFranklin · 16/05/2019 11:53

I've eaten a few Whippy ice creams and more than the recommended allowance of tuna. Other than that I've been pretty good bar the odd coffee.

Stylemebabyonemoretime · 16/05/2019 12:02

Loads of these food are not on the NHS pregnancy banned list

  • raw egg
  • smoked salmon
  • Stilton
  • peanuts
Are all allowed.
Mamabear12 · 16/05/2019 12:11

I wouldn’t take the chance. Yes, chances are small, but if it’s something you can avoid, then avoid it! Having one coffee or tea a day is fine. The rest of day replace w herbal, lemon water or whatever else you want. As for the other things you are giving up, like pp said, raw salmon fine to eat if frozen before and same with the smoked meats. It’s just 9 months, which is such a short time in the grand scheme of things. I absolutely loved having wine a few times a week (two glasses max), but it was something I really enjoyed. Day my period didn’t come and I knew I was pregnant (very regular cycle) I stopped my wine habit. Just replaced it with ice lemon water or just plain ice water. Lucky me I hate anything raw. But I do love my blue cheese, Brie etc. But I don’t dare have them when pregnant.

dementedpixie · 16/05/2019 12:14

You can have the cheeses cooked/ heated as that kills any bacteria

DulcieRay · 16/05/2019 12:23

Most of those are fine.

I try to keep off the Booze and fags but otherwise don't worry too much

I drink more than the recommended caffeine (but do cut down) and have to take prescription medication which isn't fabulous but clinically recommended due to benefit outweighing risk.

PBobs · 16/05/2019 15:03

You can definitely eat melon and sea food and at buffets when pregnant.

I ate shark early on before realising what it was. Beat myself up about it for a bit but doesn't seem to have caused any problems.

I've enjoyed salami and cured meats on pizza. Yum yum. Cooked brie etc. I think especially if you have a good food supplier - most supermarkets in the UK for example - you're fine. It's about being sensible. Not about being extreme.
