Pedicure in pregnancy. Toe infected. Help!

Hi ladies! So I had the brilliant idea to do a pedicure for a wedding I attended a couple of weeks ago. I have never ever had problems, I usually get a pedicure twice a year and it's always been fine..unfortunately this time not the case. About five days later I noticed that the skin next to my big toe was swollen and red and pressing on it hurt. Thinking it would go away naturally I left it for a week, but then when pressing it some pus came out (sorry for the graphic detail, but apparently this is a good thing!) At the pharmacy the only thing they could give me is disinfectant as all the other creams are antibiotics which need a doctor's prescription and aren't recommended in pregnancy. Ive been bathing my foot in warm water with salt and disinfectant since Thursday but the swelling is still there, no more pus though. I guess my question is has this happened to any other pregnant women here and any miracle naturale cures out there? It's quite mild so nothing massively to panicked about (and it only hurts when pressed so walked is absolutely fine) but I guess I'm just worried that it will get worse and Google has all kinds of horror stories. Anyone have any advice? I have a busy week at work and then off to a wedding abroad so am thinking if it still hasn't gone by the time I come back I should probably go to the doctor. If this has happened to anyone, or if anyone has any tips, they would be greatly appreciated! Thank you

Keep up with salt water soaking and Savlon cream is my go to for things like this. GP if it gets worse

Thank you! @loafofsellotape how long do you usually soak before it goes away? I've been doing it since Thursday and will continue to do it till the wedding then will have to stop for the weekend as will be abroad. I guess at that point if still not better I should see gp??

How long are you soaking for? I'd do at least 10-15 mins at a time with lots of salt. Followed by Savlon.

Is it hot and throbbing or just red?

Have they maybe cut your toenail bad and now the nail is growing into your skin? If they have a little cotton wool down the side of your toenail will ease the pressure. YouTube how to do it 😊 I had this when I was pregnant. Cotton wool worked a treat x

Antibiotics if it doesn't clear up.

There will be antibiotics suitable for pregnancy if needed so don't leave it too long before seeing your GP.

I had the exact same thing with a fingernail last week. It didn’t clear up so went to the GP who said ordinarily they’d give antibiotics but as I wasn’t keen, to try putting some Magnesium Sulfate paste on it to draw out the infection and covering it, and changing the dressing regularly, bathing in warm salt water in between. It worked a treat and has cleared up nicely! He did say if it didn’t though I would need antibiotics (pregnancy safe ones!).

Passthecherrycoke · 12/05/2019 20:07

I would go and get antibiotics, I’d be worried about the infection spreading

Thanks for all the responses. @loafofsellotape not hot and throbbing, now just a bit red and swollen.
@letitbegin I don't think it's the toenail as there is no nail digging it. Its sort of now got a bit of a red crust and is swollen to the side. I think that she may have cut some excess skin on the side of the toe and that's the bit that's gotten swollen.
@passthecherrycoke yes that's my biggest worry! Wouldn't want it to spread.
@muddlingmyway thanks for the advice!
I don't live in the UK so will have to see what the savlon cream equivalent is here.
