26 weeks ventriculomegaly spotted

Hi,
I went for a 4d scan today (26+3) and as the baby was badly positioned for the scan, I was offered a growth scan instead. During the scan, the sonographer has picked up that the foetus has mild ventriculomegaly. No anomalies (including this were identified at the 20 week scan and the head circumference appears to be normal). The measurement was 11.2mm. I've been told they will inform the hospital for me tomorrow but I wondered if anyone can share any information or experiences of ventriculomegaly.

Thanks :)

HI, I was told at 20 weeks that my baby has ventriculomegaly. This has since resolved. I had TORCH screening (a blood test) for infections and an amniocentesis. I’ve since had 4 weekly scans. You’re welcome to pm me. I highly recommend the Facebook group ventriculomegaly. I hope I’m not being cheeky recommending this one here, but I found it to be a huge source of support and this condition is something that many on here may not know anything about (I’d never heard of it).

Thank you very much for your reply! I will have a look for the Facebook group! Having issues actually getting referred to the hospital as they aren't interested in what the scan clinic said and have to hear it from my midwife but unfortunately she is on annual leave and I've just been told to 'wait until she is back' which is easier said than done! Can I be cheeky and ask what your initial measurement was for the ventricle? I'm glad it has resolved and hope everything else goes well for you!

Two ventricles were between 10mm and 11mm-you’re not being cheeky at all. Would your scan clinic or GP chase up the hospital? There’s always a chance that the measurements were wrong- I’ve heard that this can happen. I would strongly recommend the Facebook group as they have so much knowledge and are so supportive.

I decided to ring up the hospital myself and they are going to get back to me with a scan and blood test appointment. Thank you, I have found the group!

Oh good! I’m in the ventriculomegaly group too. You’re welcome to ask me anything, but I think the group will ultimately be more useful! Really glad they are sorting a scan and blood test. They may offer amnio and MRI too following the scan.

What was your experience of the amnio like? I really dont like the sound of it but obviously don't want to turn it down if it is important

In all honesty, I was dreading the amnio, but it was fine! I had a detailed scan, then they swabbed an area of my tummy numerous times and put a thin needle into my tummy and withdrew fluid. They used ultrasound to guide the needle. I’m squeamish and hate needles, but it really was surprisingly ok. Ive had more painful blood tests. Afterwards the area felt slightly sore, not helped my baby kicking that exact spot! I took it easy for the rest of the day and had pizza. The results came back quickly. As a little bonus, if you want to know the sex, you’ll find out definitively. I did ask about NIPT testing, but was advised against it as its not diagnostic and only tests for a few syndromes, whereas amnio tests for a lot more.
