How many newborn sized clothes do I need?

Hello all,

I feel like I should know this as I already have a DD but that was 4.5yrs ago and I’ve forgotten the basics!!

Just going through her newborn clothes and I have 7 newborn all in ones, and 4 long sleeved vests. Do I need to buy any more newborn sized clothes do you think? It’s probably worth noting this will be an August baby so temperatures should be warmer.

Dd was 7lbs and this one (as far as you can possibly tell) looks set to be similar weight. I have plenty of 0-3mnths (10lbs+) clothes and I know people tend to buy bigger so that’s fine, just purely thinking for the first couple of weeks.

Any advice welcome!!

I'd get a few more. I had a refluxy baby so could easily go through 3-4 outfit changes a day...

I wouldn't bother tbh. You've got enough, baby might be born too big to fit in them and also it'll be August. My newborn spent June to September last year in just a nappy.

My DS was nearly 9lbs so never really got in the ‘newborn’ clothes and just went straight into the 0-3month clothes for what seemed like about 5 minutes before he went onto the 3-6 months stuff.

I think you have enough all in ones but perhaps a couple more vests to layer under the all in ones on cooler nights (in case you havent gotten around to your 10th washing load of the day and you’ve had a middle of the night poo explosion Grin)

I can’t seem to ever have enough bibs and socks so if you haven’t stocked up that could be a recommendation.

Are you planning on swaddling your wee one? I can’t rave on about the ‘love to dream’ arms up swaddles enough. Completely changed DSs sleep patterns (meaning he actually slept) as he hated having his arms swaddles by his sides. If you do get them, get a couple so you have one spare clean one.

Congratulations!

I would say probably a week's worth allowing for maybe 3 changes a day. So perhaps 21 outfits/baby grows. Then if you are washing babies clothes seperate in non bio, you don't have to worry about making sure you get a washing on every day. You will probably get quite a few things from family and friends in new born sizes.

Infact if it's newborn I wouldn't get that much, maybe go for a mixture of newborn and 0-3.

I'd get a pack of short sleeved vests, that's about it really. Or look for a newborn bundle on selling sites.

I had an August baby and I was so worried about keeping him cool but really they need proper sleepsuits at first as they can't regulate their temp well and after that it really quickly seems to be Autumn.

The shops won't close because you've had a baby. You can always send DH or someone else to Asda to pick up some more basics if you need them.

Ooo really useful replies already.
I do all washing in non bio so that’s fine.

Re swaddling. I don’t know, I didn’t with DD. A friend gave me two of her swaddle blankets and they didn’t ever get used. I’m fact I may still have them....

I think I will pick up a few more bits. I’m quite a fan of the Sainsbury’s vests actually. I think I will get some short sleeved ones.

Dd was a January baby so she was in layers, it’s very different contemplating an August baby, especially when we live in the UK!

I didn't feel like I had a summer baby at all.
