Hi everyone, :)

Im just new to the site, but at my wits end so im looking for some advice. Im almost 9 weeks pregnant, i have been told i have Hyperemesis Gravidarum, basically i found out i was pregnant at 5 weeks due to extreme nausea and since then ive lost almost a stone in weight, i am bed bound most days as i cannot physically get up as i am so weak. I have had 2 good days in the past four weeks, one of which was when i got released from hospital due to dehydration, and one was last week when the GP came out to give me an anti-sickness injection. I am taking Cyclizine 3 times a day and also the tablets that dissolve between gum and lip. I have 2 children who are 8 and 5 and i feel so sorry for them, my husband has been really good with helping but he works long days. Sorry for the long rant, i feel so alone in feeling like this, my mother in law thinks this is normal in pregnancy and thinks i should be coping better. Any advice from any mums who have or who have had previously HG pregnancies?

Thank you. XX

Poor you! You sound exactly like me - although my DS is now 3 and a half. I was extreme lily from around 4 to 17 weeks, in and out of hospital.

Are you any medication for it? I was prescribed anti-emetics and they were a Godsend. Other than that all I ate was Skittles and mini Cheddars.

The anti-sickness bands were useful too - sometimes just took the edge of the constant nausea

Hi Livpool,

Thanks for your reply. :)

Yes im on cyclizine tablets 3 times a day and the buccastem tablets twice a day but none seem to be helping. Did yours dissapear completely at 17weeks? Or did it just ease off? I have tried anti-sickness bands, ginger snaps, ginger chews from holland and barratt and qeuesy mints. Nothing helping. Ive been living on crunch nut cereal in the morning and tinned chicken soup through the day. I hope it eases in second trimester.

I think it's a trial and error thing with your medication. First time around 3x daily cyclizine worked perfectly for me and I was back on my feet. Second time around, cyclizine would t touch it on its own and I ended up with cyclizine, ondansetron and metoclopromide all together and that got me through. I would request a medication review with your GP. I didn't find sea bands or any other alternative therapies helpful. It's horrible and you have my sympathy, but you will get through it. Thanks

There’s a great hg support thread on here if you’re interested.

Are the drugs helping at all? Sometimes you need a combination of drugs. Also, what dose of the prochloroperazine are you on (the buccal) as I believe you can take in pg 10mg up to 3 times a day.

For me it was only when ondansetron was introduced at full dose did I notice an improvement. I was also on the two drugs you are already on too so take three in combination. They all work in different ways so it’s finding a mix that works for you. Despite being on full dose of these 3 meds I was still (and still am) predominantly housebound, but in myself it has improved symptoms to feel most of the time that I can survive this. Many gps are unwilling to prescribe ondansetron as it is quite expensive and/or they don’t have the knowledge to know it can be given in pg. best thing is to ask your gp (or hospital when next admitted) and if they won’t you are within your rights to be referred to a consultant who might have more knowledge to do this. I would not have coped without ondansetron and convinced I would have had a termination by now should I not have got it (and this is a very wanted and planned pg).

I know how awful it feels and how you just want to die it’s so bad. I really feel for you, but this is not normal and you’re not weak for how you’re coping.

Same boat as you hun...Its awful i know!4th baby for me.Im 15+3...started at week 6..I had sickness with my 3 boys...But Nothing like this before...I move from my bed...to my sofa...even if im not vomitting i feel sick 247...light headed...no energy...moving around makes me feel more sick...My older boys get themselves ready...make cereal and go to school & back by theirselves...but i also have a 2 year old who i feel terrible for...lots of t.v & easy foods...my partner makes his (my 2 years olds) lunch the night before he goes to work. And does all the housework when he comes home...my 2 year olds just started nursery & even the 10 min walk is horrible...Ive had 1 hospital stay & was given ondasetron...as cyclizine started not to work anymore..it holds the puke down 99% of the time...but nothing takes away this nausea...Drink flavoured water instead of plain...It tastes better...Dry toast...Thats all i can manage really...Hand hold for you more than advice...your not alone!

Hi OP, congrats on the pregnancy but so sorry that you have to go through HG.
there is a fab HG support thread on here, please also check out a charity called pregnancy sickness support, which offers advice and information about NVP & HG, they can also pair you up with a supportive volunteer who has been through it to help you.

Thank you all for youre replies ladies.

It is an awful thing to deal with when we are trying to grow babies, it makes me feel depressed not getting out the house and cant even make it to work. I think i will make an appointment with my GP for a medication review.
Reastie the medication worked for the first few days and is helping me not vomit so much through the day but as you say its not just the nausea and vomiting, its the weakness, exhaustion and everything else than comes along with it too. This is my first HG pregnancy, others were mild morning sickness.

Smallbee i will be sure to have a look for the thread and search up the charity it would be good to have someone to chat to through this.

My3boys9910 its awful isnt it. My 8 year old fends for herself in the morning i get up with her and do her hair but my 5 year old isnt at school til August so shes about most of the day with me. I feel especially guilty when its a sunny day :(

Thank you for the advice ladies.

I was on the same as you - and hey helped but symptoms didn't disappear.

Yep - I woke up at 17 weeks and felt 'normal' - I was worried something was up!

I didn't use anything with ginger in as it didn't help me. And even now I can't stand the taste
