Hi ladies hope your all well?!

I'm currently 5+3 weeks PG, saw my GP today and he has booked me in with a midwife on the 20th this month for a booking in appointment, just wondering what happens in this appointment, I'm new to all of this :)
Thanks in advance xx

It's a pretty long appointment where the midwife will give you some information, book your first scan and ask for information about yourself, baby's dad and medixal backgrounds. They may also take some blood from you :)

@needanapp thanks for your reply! Yeah i got warned it could take up to an hour maybe longer! So exciting :)

You’ll need to provide a urine sample as well. My surgery give out the sample pots if you just ask for one from reception, so you can get one beforehand. Other than that, as needanappp has said, it’s lots of questions about your medical history. If your partner goes with you they may ask him to wait outside for the first part as they do ask questions just to ascertain if you have any concerns over your relationship, eg domestic violence etc, but it’s just part of their job, so don’t take it personally. He’ll be allowed in after those questions have been asked. I was weighed, blood pressure, blood sample taken. Depending on how the system works where you are, they may ring the antenatal scanning dept at your chosen hospital to book your 12 week scan then and there, or they may refer you to them and they send a letter advising of your scan date.

I read loads of posts on here saying the booking in appointment is a long one, even my own mother said 2 hours! I was in and out in about 30-45 minutes (including some waiting and filling out an initial form).
It was literally arrive, wee in a pot, fill in a form, blood pressure, height/weight, carbon monoxide test. Then questions about previous medical history and home life. Then given a pack. Then told to wait outside for a blood test! Super quick. My 12-week scan was already pre-arranged via a letter.

Think it might depend on where you go but I was quite pleased I wasn’t in there for 2 hours!

Thanks for your replies ladies! It all just makes it seem so real, especially because my OH and I haven't told anyone!
I'll be on holiday when I hit the 12 week mark do you think I'd be able to get a scan before holiday at 11 weeks? Xx

How long your appointment does tend depends on how high risk your pregnancy is. I have a laundry list of conditions that mean I will be consultant led and midwife spent time clarifying each one, taking down meds, and medical notes etc, so took over an hour and a half. I wasn’t asked any domestic violence questions but I think that’s because my DH was with me; it might get pushed to the next appointment.

You can have the scan from 12 until 13+ 4/5ish if you want the screening done. I can’t remember the exact cut off for it but I know it can’t be before 12 weeks. If you don’t want the screening then they can do it at 11 weeks.

Worrier2019 · 08/05/2019 06:38

@Millsss it is unlikely they will give you a scan before 12 weeks, but it's certainly worth asking!

Millsss · 08/05/2019 09:16

Thanks ladies didn't think they would do it before, I guess it will be something to look forward too when we're back from holiday though! :)
I did have an early misscarriage last month so will definitely mention that!! Xx

@Ells0204 I think the length depends on how much you have to tell them. I have excessively boring family and health history and was out in 45 mins. I had nothing to tell them.

needanappp · 08/05/2019 19:11

I'd mention the holiday to your midwife with regards to your scan as if you want the Downs/Edwards etc screening the cut off is 14 weeks

Millsss · 09/05/2019 13:32

@needanapp yeah will definitely mention it to her, I did tell my gp aswell and we've got good insurance to cover us if god forbid anything was to happen!!!
The day we land I will be 11+6 weeks so plenty of time! Xx
