Hi all

What TTC pregnancy supplements are recommended?

I've read mixed reviews about pregnacare.

I'm looking for one that contains all the daily recommendations

Thank you

I was recommended pregnacare max by my consultant. The only mixed reviews you should find are from people who struggle to swallow the tablets (there are 3 of them and quite large so if you have MS might struggle). In terms of nutrition they are perfect.

I took the ASDA own brand pregnancy multivitamins with omega 3. They seemed to contain all the same ingredients but are far cheaper! Will continue taking them daily now I've had my BFP. Only thing to advise (which I'm sure is the case with all brands) is that they can make you feel a bit queasy if you take them on an empty stomach so try to have them with a meal if possible.

I used boots version of pregnacare. It seemed to have the same ingredients and is usually on 3 for 2. Also comes in different sizes boxes if you need a couple of extra weeks supply at the end of your pregnancy! Congratulations OP!

Nutritionally the own brand tablets are almost exactly the same as the Pregnacare Max with the exception of calcium and magnesium which are at lower levels.

Oops! I just realised you are looking at TTC vitamins, I was talking about pregnancy ones sorry! Good luck!

Thanks all.

Is 400mg of folic the minimum, is there a maximum? I've read a lot on iron levels and calcium too

Was also recommended Pregnacare Max by our consultant

Teddybear45 · 07/05/2019 17:37

No they aren’t the same. Pregnacare Max contains 50 percent of folic acid in the active form which is easier to digest if you have issues digesting folic acid (most people are only tested after a problem is discovered during pregnancy or during infertility testing).

Betsie86 · 07/05/2019 17:45

Do it's not technically 400mg in them?

200mg folic acid + 200mg folate = your 400mg folic acid dose. Folate is a better way to get your folic acid.

Teddybear45 · 07/05/2019 17:49

That’s one of the reasons why it’s expensive. I have seen 100 percent folate tablets around for double the price.

dementedpixie · 07/05/2019 17:52

You only need folic acid and vitamin D

DulcieRay · 07/05/2019 17:56

Your midwife might be able to give you the healthy start vitamins. They have everything you need in.

MsSquiz · 07/05/2019 18:04

When TTC I used the seven seas trying for a baby tablets. They were much easier to swallow than the pregnacare ones as they are tiny, and have the days marked on the packet, like the pill, so you can keep track.

I had hoped their pregnancy ones would be the same size, but they are the huge tablets, like the pregnacare

Betsie86 · 07/05/2019 18:10

Thank you. I've found it quite confusing!

I'm not sure I'm clear on folic acid though. Most I have seen just say 400 mg folic acid other than the Bauer pre natal which has 800mg in.

Is there any reason you should be on a much higher folic acid dose? Obesity, Coeliac, pre-existing conditions? If so, see your GP and they can prescribe you the 5mg dose. If not 400mcg will suffice.
