Constant Thrush since giving birth

Ever since I gave birth I have had thrush around 5-6 times. That is all within the past 18 weeks. I haven't changed washing powder, I've always wore cotton underwear, I haven't changed a thing. However since giving birth I keep on getting thrush, and it's really starting to get me down. Had sex twice since giving birth because of the constant bouts of it, so it's really starting to interfere with my sex life. I also get it the next day after having sex. I used to get it every now and then before, but this takes the biscuit really. Partner doesn't have it, so it's not him. Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening, or happened to anyone before? I'm thinking of making a Doctors appointment about it, but what can they do? Nothing I suspect, as I don't know what's causing it. I'm back on the contraceptive pill, do you think it could be that that's causing it? I never had any issues with it before.
It's driving me crazy 😩

Has your partner been treated? Even without symptoms he could be passing it back you.
How are you treating it when it flares up? The only thing that worked for me was the oral tablet, at one point I needed a dose everyday for a week.
The pill was a trigger for me, I had taken it for years with no problem before that

Speak to your doctor, they can check it's thrush and prescribe you an ongoing course that should get rid of it.

Things I've found to help: avoid fragrant bubble baths, wash underwear without conditioner and reduce the sugar in your diet.

Hope you get it sorted soon :)

Partner hasn't been treated no, but he said he's had it before and doesn't have symptoms.
I recently had it at my smear, so I mentioned it to the nurse, she swobbed me and it came back as thrush, so Doctor prescribed me the oral table, Fluconazole. Never taken that before, i normally great it with the over the counter canesten pessary. I get it even when I don't have sex, averaging once every 2 weeks. The other week I had it so bad 2 pessarys never worked. I nearly didn't attend a family get together as I had itched myself raw and was so sore.
I've been reading a Doctor can prescribe the oral tablet to take every week to keep it at bay. So I think I'm going to make an appointment. I only rinse with warm water down there now, as even unscented washes like femfresh etc bring it on now, and never used to. I understand hormone changes etc after birth, but didn't think it would get this bad! I currently have it again now. Do you think I'm best to have the symptoms when attending my appointment?

Definitely, see the GP and talk about the frequency of recurrence.

Birth can have a significant impact on your body flora and it can take a long time for this to correct. If you had antibiotics or intervention, this can have an impact. Your hormones have gone through huge dips and surges in the past year and it can take time for these to rebalance, so it is indeed possible that the pill can have had an impact.

In any case, it would be wise to exclude refined sugar from your diet, take probiotics, internally and topically and if you can, follow a gut cleanse programme to see if this helps to settle things down.

Definitely go back to the GP each time you have flare ups - this will create a bigger picture and you may definitely need to switch contraception!

RedWineAllMine · 07/05/2019 08:24

Ifyou'regunna How long did you have to take the tablet for to keep it at bay? And was it a success?

I had antibiotics yes as it came to light I had Strep B after birth, and another infection, along with infection in my stitches.

But that was days after giving birth, in January.

I had this problem because I had antibiotics after birth and antibiotics for strep b.

Mine went after I took the oral one the Dr gives you and I started drinking a probiotic.

UnPocoLoco2 · 07/05/2019 09:06

Speak to the gp . I got recurrent infections and it turned out I had both thrush and bv. I got antibiotics and have not had a problem since.

IfYoureGonnaTakeAShotAtTheKing · 07/05/2019 09:13

I took a weeks worth of the oral tablet, my husband took one too and that solved it. I've had it since but one dose of the tablet had sorted it

RedWineAllMine · 07/05/2019 09:22

Thank you for all your advice. I will make an appointment. Going to have to start buying those probiotic drinks to have every morning too.
I will update for anyone interested, who may have the same problem, if they come across this thread.

My 7 (nearly 8) week old has had bad oral thrush since two weeks old. She's had medicine every six hours for 3/4 of her life!! Anyway, it means I've been doing some reading...

It seems there are some non-prescription things you can take to avoid getting thrush (but won't clear up the full-blown infection). Natural yogurts (for the probiotics). Also you can take some probiotics in tablet form, but more varieties of probiotic come in the yoghurt.

But the new one for me was grapefruit seed extract (not grape seed extract). Also introducing coconut oil into the diet is something that people do.

Basically, you need to change your flora and fauna down there, as the conditions causing the overgrowth aren't changing despite the medicine you've been taking.

Btw - this sounds horrid. Sorry you've had to go through it!

RedWineAllMine · 29/05/2019 09:35

Update as promised for anyone interested, or going through the same thing.
I made an appointment with my GP, I had my bloods done, tested for diabetes, liver, kidneys, thyroid etc. All came back normal. My treatment is 6 months oral tablet. To start off with I take one every 3 days for 9 days, then one weekly for 6 months. That's a lot of oral thrush tablets! But apparently that treats the problem. Fingers crossed! 🤞

Hi @RedWineAllMine sorry for commenting when this post is so old but I’m going through this now and I’m at my wits end! My baby is 6 months old and I’ve pretty much had thrush constantly since she was born. Like you I had antibiotics for Strep B during labour so wondering if that’s what’s causing it. I’ve had numerous rounds of pessaries/creams from the pharmacy and an oral tablet from the gum clinic, but nothing has worked.

Did your treatment work? Xx
