I'm 18 weeks pregnant and just started getting what I assume is acid reflux which I've never suffered with before so don't really know what to do to help it ☹️ Is there anything I can have in pregnancy that could help? It feels like my throat and chest is burning and has been awful this evening, just need something to help! Thanks in advance 🤗

Have you tried rennies or something like that? A glass of milk can help too.

whatswithtodaytoday · 05/05/2019 22:03

Rennies. I'm 10 weeks postpartum and am still finding packets of them stashed in all my bags and every room of the house. I'm surprised my baby isn't made of chalk.

BoomZahramay · 05/05/2019 22:05

Gaviscon. And sympathy. It's bloody horrible.

DameSylvieKrin · 05/05/2019 22:08

As pp suggests, over the counter remedies, milk can help, as can avoiding trigger foods and not eating 3 hours before bed. Don’t overdo the safe dose of Rennies in pregnancy though — can’t remember if it’s 5 or 11.
However, if it gets worse there are prescription options that are perfectly safe but you will have to push for them.
I didn’t sleep more than 90 minutes at a time from week 30 because of heartburn. I got something prescribed the 6th time I asked. It worked within half an hour.

In two pregnancies only thing that worked for my acid reflux was Ranitidine. I saw the GP for it initially but when she said she would just prescribe the same strength as the OTC version I decided to just buy it rather than take the prescription.
Also eating dinner early (5 to 6pm) and only snacking on really bland food like bread and butter or a banana of an evening. I also drank milk with every meal.

Hollowvictory · 05/05/2019 22:18

Gaviscon I used to drink at least a bottle a day

callmecrazybut · 05/05/2019 22:18

Gaviscon worked for me, but get the mint one, the aniseed is awful! I also had warm milk instead of tea sometimes which had the bonus of keeping the caffeine levels down.

Em39ma · 05/05/2019 22:18

I’m 16 weeks and had to be prescribed 300ml of ranitidine.
Was on the over the counter dose wasn’t really working, now upped me to the top dose.
I’ve had it since 5 weeks, it’s my first pregnancy symptom, so it steadily gets worse and worse.
I feel for you it is horrible

SospanFrangipan · 05/05/2019 22:26

The only thing that helped me was oneprazole from the GP. It was that bad that it was waking me 4/5 times during the night, and burning my throat.

practicallyperfectmummy · 05/05/2019 22:29

Gaviscon, don't eat late and dairy makes it worse. Almonds really help, if it gets really bad ( I was going to bed then waking an hour later to throw up) ask gp for ranatadine. It's really helped but I'm still sick sometimes if I don't watch how late I eat or don't avoid certain foods.

18 weeks too and the acid is awful, especially in the evening. My neighbour told me milk with honey or yoghurt, the milk has worked for me so far

ListenLinda · 05/05/2019 22:34

Omeprazole. Saved my sanity during pregnancy with DS. Waking up numerous times a night with bile, constant burning pain. It was like a miracle 😂

NameChangedNoImagination · 05/05/2019 22:55

Milk of magnesia

Andrea91 · 06/05/2019 11:58

Eat smaller meals more often. Avoid spicy foods. Dont eat and drink t same times. Dont lay down after eating. If that doesn't help go gp. I take omeprazole and helps loads.

Shelbybear · 06/05/2019 21:17

Oh I feel for you and I hate to be the bearer of bad news but it often gets worse the further on you get.

I didn't get it till I was 6/7 months and it was so bad. Couldn't sleep at night, it used to wake me up and I'd try propping up with pillows which was uncomfortable. Drank litres of milk and gaviscon, neither of which I think actually helped.

I found out towards the end of my pregnancy that the doctor can prescribe something better than over the counter stuff. So if it gets worse go see your gp. I wish I had known that for the 2/3 months of pregnancy!

Another vote for omeprazole. I suffered with reflux pre-pregnancy and was on medication which I stopped when I found out I was pregnant. It was hell. I could barely eat and lost a lot of weight. My GP suggested OTC ranitidine which helped a little but at 20 weeks I went to a different GP because I couldn’t cope with it anymore and he prescribed omeprazole. He said I could take up to 80mg a day but 20mg is all I need and have had no reflux at all. I’ve actually been able to enjoy my pregnancy since I started taking it.

Dija1234 · 09/05/2019 12:23

Hi I was wondering if some one can help me. I'm nearly 8 weeks pregnant first baby. I suffered from really bad lpr acid reflux before I was evan pregnant. Due to poor eating and drinking loads of coke. I had to go privet because the gp just kept on thinking it was a bacterial sore throat infection. Anyway the privet doctor put a camera in my nose and straight away told me I had lpr. I've been taking my omeprazole every day. Also have been eating less cz I honestly dont have an appetite to evan eat anything. I've stoped the coke. But it's still not going away. I've had constant phlem in my throat. And my throat just feels so hard to swollow. Like a lump is stuck. I've made an appoitment to get acupuncture done. Apparently it may help. I feel so tired and helpless right now. Help 😭😭

Nerdy123 · 05/01/2020 15:39

@Dija1234 can i ask how you are? I have what i suspect is LPR im worried as i want to try for a baby after my miscarriages and stress i have this problem and im unsure how it will be with a baby? I have lost weight through diet in trying to curb my sore throat etc. Any advice or help will be greatly appreciate. Please.
