Aspirin in 3rd trimester

Have been prescribed aspirin because of my age, but now I've had a look at the package insert it clearly says, twice, do not take in the last 3 months of pregnancy. Not just consult your doctor first type disclaimer that everything says.
Does anyone know if you are supposed to stop taking it at some stage? They only gave me the prescription last week and I'm in the last 3 months.

I haven't been told to stop the mine, and I see a consultant every two weeks. In fact they were clear that I need to take right up until elcs

Here is some info from NHS

If you're thought to be at a high risk of developing pre-eclampsia, you may be advised to take a daily dose of low-dose aspirin from the 12th week of pregnancy until your baby is delivered

www.nhs.uk/conditions/pre-eclampsia/

The wouldn't recommend it if it wasn't safe!

UnaOfStormhold · 03/05/2019 19:59

I was told to stop at 36 weeks because it slightly increases the risk of having a heavy bleed during labour/CS. It may depend on balance of risks in your specific case so I'd get medic advice on when to stop.

seven201 · 03/05/2019 20:02

I was advised to take it up until I think day before my c-section at 39 weeks. Mine was for high blood pressure (that did turn into pres-eclampsia) in case that makes a difference.

Blossom28 · 03/05/2019 20:02

Ask when to stop as I took it until delivery and had a blood loss of 2.5 litres. Did stop me getting pre eclampsia though so just make sure you ask when to stop

Teddybear45 · 03/05/2019 20:16

why are they making you take it?

eightoclock · 03/05/2019 20:18

Thanks all. Done a bit more reading and the beneficial effects are apparently only if you start it before 16 weeks. So by starting at 27 weeks I (and the baby) get all the risks and none of the benefits. I don't have any faith in the midwife as she said it was completely safe with no risks whatsoever.

Aged over 35 and 1St baby

Ask a few more questions to the consultant if you have one. If they believe you are high risk of preclamsia the gold standard treatment is now low molecular weight heparin (with aspirin only used if you get it).

TheChineseChicken · 03/05/2019 20:37

Are you sure it's just age? I haven't heard of this before

NatureGal · 03/05/2019 20:44

Just had my fourth baby, took aspirin from 16 weeks due to pre eclampsia risk and raised bmi. Consultant instructed to take it until 37th week. Been the same in all of my pregnancies since 2014.

StargazyDrifter · 03/05/2019 21:17

My consultant also said stop at 36 weeks, ahead of ELCS. MW said 39 weeks but I'm going to go with the consultant.

ellesbellesxxx · 03/05/2019 21:21

I was told to take it by my consultant from 20 weeks until the week before induction (35w) to help decrease risk of prematurity for my twins.

Yes, no other risk factors. My first midwife never mentioned it either, hence not starting on it until 27 weeks!

I don't have a consultant as low risk pregnancy... Just a midwife who is unaware of the risks of taking aspirin in the third trimester!

OP posts:
Teddybear45 · 03/05/2019 22:07

Oh ok if it’s just the midwife reccomending it ‘just in case’ then don’t take it.

Nervousdave · 03/05/2019 22:17

I am on daily aspirin to manage a health issue, however my neurologist and GP both said that I would have to move to something else for the last trimester.
The risks are that it can delay labour, and can cause haemorrhage during labour. I'm pretty sure they normally switch from aspirin to heparin (injections?) for the last trimester

Cosmogirl86 · 03/05/2019 22:39

It really isn't the case that women are changed to enoxaparin in the last trimester. That carries a much higher risk of bleed out
