Hi all.

My DD is now seven weeks old, but had her six week review today. She was quite small for her gestational age at birth (weighed 6lb 6oz despite being born at 41 weeks). However, she only lost 3% of her birth weight and at 12 days old was 7lb 6oz.

Today, she weighed 10lbs 13oz! The health visitor was happy with this, but it seems like a lot of weight to gain in just seven weeks! DD is thriving, very alert and content, so I’m not overly worried. Just surprised! Did anyone else’s babe gain a lot of weight?

Pics of my DD just because ❤️

Oh, and I’m combination feeding.

I can't help, mine were prems so no experience of 'normal' weight gain.... but I want to smoosh your DDs cheeks! She is gorgeous!

BroomstickOfLove · 02/05/2019 16:43

She's so cute! Congratulations on your gorgeous baby.

My DD was born smallish but gained 1lb a week on normal weeks and 2lbs during growth spurts for the first couple of months. She went from 25th centile to 98th. I spent a LOT of time feeding her. She was quite fat until she started walking and since then she's been tall and thin in shape. She's now 12. So your lovely DD sounds perfectly normal.

Congratulations! She looks perfect for 7 weeks. Do bear in mind that plenty of newborns are around 9-10 lbs so I wouldn't worry. I say that as someone who was obsessed with my DS's weight for the first 6 months Grin

WeTookVows · 02/05/2019 16:48

Congratulations, she's a lovely baby.

3lb 7oz gain in 5 weeks (since 12 day check) seems a disproportionately large amount but it's totally normal. Human babies are born particularly small and vulnerable compared to other primates due to our pelvises being smaller for walking upright, so they gain and develop a lot in the early weeks.

She's beautiful!
My 33 weeker- small for dates 3lbs 7oz because of my severe pre eclampsia - piled it on once out in the open. I remember just over a pound one week.
I wouldn't worry, I think they find their level at this stage and she looks great on it.

Ds was 17lb at 10 weeks. The paed called him fatso but was thrilled at how chunky he was. He hasn’t had an ounce of fat on him since he was three. He just really liked breastfeeding.

My DS was very similar, he was born at 37 weighing 6lb 10 and never lost an ounce of weight. He started piling it on from the start and at 6 weeks he was 10lb 11 and at 7 weeks 11lb 7. He was purely breastfed and regularly used to put on a pound a week lol.
He followed the 75th centile and is now 11 and tall for his age.
My DD was born 6lb 8 and lost 9% of weight and at 2 weeks is only slightly above birthweight so doesn't look like she will follow the same pattern ☺️

abcriskringle · 02/05/2019 16:59

Congrats OP! Yeah my son was an absolute chunk- gained near enough 5lbs in the first 6 weeks and he was 8lbs 10oz at birth.

CobaltRose96 · 02/05/2019 17:00

Thanks all! She’s quite tall too (90th percentile for height and head circumference!). I’m 5’10” myself so looks like she’ll take after me!

My dd is 7 weeks yesterday. Born at 40+5 and weighed 6 lb 9. Yesterday she was 10lb 5, so weight gain not dissimilar!!

Sexnotgender · 02/05/2019 17:05

She’s so cute! My DS has turned into a right little chubster. He was 7lb 15 at birth and 11lb 2 at 6 week check.

He’s nearly 13 weeks and I was hoping to have him weighed tomorrow but health Visitor has rescheduled until next week.

Her0utdoors · 02/05/2019 17:16

Is she tracking her line in the red book and staying on her centile? Might not be current guidance, but crossing on line isn't cause for concern, but crossing two would be, although upwards only really if you aren't breastfeeding. Congratulations, she's totally perfect.

Her0utdoors · 02/05/2019 17:19

Oh, and health visitors aren't always spot on recording weight and hight, worth double checking the chart has been marked correctly or and conversion from metric to imperial is right!

anxietyanxiety · 02/05/2019 23:01

Mine is 6 months and only 16lbs! Slow coach. All babies are different though. No one size fits all. Your little one is a cutie!

SansaClegane · 02/05/2019 23:10

Mine were all around 10lbs at birth, and then over a stone at the 6 week check Grin I seem to recall DS3 was 15 lbs 10oz at his checkup, but then he did grow above the growth chart for the first half year.
They're all skinny as rakes now, although taller than average.

foreverhanging · 02/05/2019 23:16

Waaaahhhhh omg what a beautiful baby!!
