Low placenta?

We have had our 20 w scan and were thrilled to find out we are having a little boy! However during the scan I was told my placenta was low and they will recall me. I have to go back quite soon as our little one was fighting so much but now I wish I had asked more. I have googled low placenta and it seems only in rare occasions it causes problems as it usually moves but has anyone else had this? If it hasn’t moved at the next scan what are the next steps?

Basically they just keep an eye on it - no probs if it keeps away from cervix- if it impinges the cervix there is a risk of it detaching / bleeding the nearer you get to term. Partner had this, lost plug and significant bleeding at ~33 weeks, consultant basically kept her in hospital after that - two more occasions of significant bleeding and being prepped for emcs - ultimately 6.5 pounder delivered by CS after a 3rd bleed at 38 weeks - the major issue was basically the boredom of 5 weeks in hospital and Jeremy Kyle on the ward tv (she's 10 now)

Thank you for replying. Really hoping it will have lifted by next scan or a later one if I need another as that sounds pretty scary. Glad to hear the outcome was good though!

I had this and therefore had an additional scan about 30wks if I remember rightly. It had raised so no issues and I delivered normally (if there is such a thing...!)

VanillaLatteAndCake · 01/05/2019 17:03

And congratulations!

EnjoyItAll · 01/05/2019 17:17

Thank you! It’s our first baby so it was all a bit overwhelming finding out it was a boy and trying to keep up with what was on the screen so I didn’t ask any questions. She didn’t seem concerned and did say a lot lift at a later date so I guess it’s just a waiting game now

I had complete placenta previa at my 20 week scan,by 22 weeks I was rescanned and it had moved totally out of the way. In 90% of cases it does move so try not to worry.

EnjoyItAll · 01/05/2019 17:22

That is really reassuring! I am due to be scanned very soon again as they needed more information they couldn’t get so hoping for a positive result rather than waiting another 10 plus weeks

I'd detailed the case to give an Idea of the sort of thing that happens on the rare occasions it doesn't move- forgot (sorry) to emphasise that we came to understand that praevia is a 'normal' rare occurrence and the different teams knew exactly what to expect / how to handle - boredom and the fact that she missed out on a chunk of baby shopping really was the main downside as it all kicked off just as she started maternity leave!

Bubblebubble123 · 01/05/2019 20:42

In most cases it moves out of the way of the cervix. Mine didn’t and it just meant I had to have a planned c section at 38 weeks. It’s dangerous if you go into labour with it I think so doc wanted baby out earlier to prevent this. I didn’t have any bleeding throughout my pregnancy thankfully but I think it’s quite common to bleed with a low placenta. Just remember it’s very rare for it not to move!

Snowdropheaven · 01/05/2019 20:44

Don't worry this happened to me. I think they are more cautious about this stuff now. Mine had sorted itself out when I went back :)

Eslteacher06 · 01/05/2019 20:59

Is it anterior or posterior? Is it completely covering your cervix or near it? (Questions to ask next time...might even be on scan report).

Apparently posterior is more likely to move. I've had this with both pregnancies, it had moved with the first one and I had a normal delivery. I'm 35 weeks now and had a scan at 32 weeks but although it had moved, it hadn't moved enough. It needs to be 2cm clear (mine was 1.8cm). I have another scan at 36 weeks.

They will discuss a C-section if it hasn't cleared by 36 weeks.

afternoontwee · 01/05/2019 21:00

I have this too! Due to go back at 32 weeks at the start of July. My midwife told me that in most cases it moves out of the way. If it doesn’t, then I’d be moved to consultant led care and they’d discuss options (most likely a planned section) but that in 90% of cases it would rectify itself.

Enjoyitall, I’m bemused by you using the royal “we” - are you queen of somewhere?! It reminds me of Margaret Thatcher announcing “ We are a grandmother”!

EnjoyItAll · 02/05/2019 07:42

I meant me and my husband had the scan @babdoc thank you for the useful advice when I’m clearly asking about something that is concerning me. I will remember to just say I in future to appease you

Thank you everyone. It’s good to know what to expect if it doesn’t move as well. I’m not sure if it’s anteria or posteria so will be checking my notes tonight and asking if I can’t find it on them!

@enjoyitall ignore the sarky comment. There's always one....

anonforthespies43267 · 02/05/2019 19:47

I had an anterior low placenta at 20 wks, had a private 4d scan at 28wks & asked her to check position & she said if it has moved then it hasn’t moved enough.

I’m 32wks tomorrow & have a scan in 2 weeks to check.

I’m consultant led already but she said they’ll monitor until 37wks if it hasn’t moved then it’ll be a c section x

Thismummyruns · 03/05/2019 02:12

I had this at my 20 week scan. Was rescanned as standard practice for my area at 32 weeks and it was well clear by their guidelines.
We had paid for a private scan at 27 weeks and it'd already moved by that point so we already knew.

HTH

EnjoyItAll · 03/05/2019 10:37

they have called me back pretty soon as couldn't get everything they wanted at 20w so hoping I will be told it's better by the but good to know the process for 30w plus. I was going to avoid private scans but might go for one nearer the time if I don't get good news at this one

I have this I am currently 24 weeks was detected at 15 weeks after a bleed and has not moved it's mainly posterior but is wrapping round anterior and it's a complete previa it's basically a U shape over cervix from front to back I have been told with the type/grade I have then mine probably won't move as anterior has more chances of moving than posterior and mines mainly at back.

I am having scans at 28 and 32 and if it remains in situation as they expect I am having a c section at 36 as they don't run risk of anymore bleeding.

Been told no heavy lifting and no sex.

Good luck zzz

casper1992 · 05/05/2019 08:04

Hello, I have a low lying placenta too and was re scanned at 28,32 and awaiting 36 week scan now. They have told me if the placenta isn't 2cm clear of OS then I will have a planned C-section.

Throughout they have told me that bleeding can be an issue with a low lying placenta and to avoid sex.

Hope this helps and hope everything goes well for you :) xx

EnjoyItAll · 05/05/2019 08:30

Thank you! my recall for scan has already come through and it's really quick so doubt I will see much change but it's more to get the information they couldn't get at 20w scan. I'm going to ask them about it then to see what position my placenta is in. Hoping to not need a c section but I will take what ever route is safest!

casper1992 · 05/05/2019 12:58

Yeah I was supposed to be re scanned at 32, 34 and 36 but for some reason they did 28. I don't know if they explained it to you but it's not actually your placenta that moves it's your uterus that grows and your placenta moves with it, so you'd be surprised at how much it can move as you get bigger! I've got my next and final scan this week to see if it's moved anymore, I've mentally prepared for a C-section now though so I'm the opposite and don't want it to have moved haha!! Xx

IntoValhalla · 05/05/2019 13:08

Shamelessly following this thread, as I have the same problem, diagnosed at my 12 week scan!
I have my 20 week scan next week and I’m praying that it moves out of the way Sad After a huskies hospital birth with DC1 and a perfectly calm home birth with DC2, the idea of having to give birth in hospital and have a csection is an utterly terrifying prospect for me Sad

IntoValhalla · 05/05/2019 13:09

hideous, not huskies Hmm stupid chubby thumbs!! Hmm
