Hello everyone,

I just wanted some advice. I've been asked to have an MRI on my head which I believe will come back with nothing bas. However, I 5 weeks pregnant and the NHS guidance on the website is that it is not recommended although the neurologist has said that it's fine. Has anyone been in a similar situation? Thanks!

I had an MRI on my abdomen when I was around 24 weeks pregnant. It was fine, just a little uncomfortable lying on my back for a long time.

And congratulations!

Hi yes I have been. Before I found out I was pregnant I was due to have an mri of my brain and spine. I told my neurologist I was pregnant and she advised not to have this in the first trimester. I scheduled to have it in the 2nd trimester but on the day the radiologist phoned me and said he would advised I waited until after the baby was born to have it. The reason for this was he said they don't have enough evidence to say 100% it is safe for the baby. He said there is some small evidence it may damage their hearing. He also said he would only recommend mri in pregnancy if it was specifically to look at the baby or if mum was unwell and clinically needed the mri urgently. In these cases he said the benefit of the procedure may outweigh the risk. I was very well and had no need to go through with the mri for myself so I have cancelled it until after the baby is born. It was a difficult decision as there isn't any concrete evidence either way but I didn't want to take the risk. I hope this helps you to decide xx

I had an MRI on my head at 28(?) weeks pregnant (I forget exactly how many weeks, but it was around then) as I was experiencing severe visual disturbances. It was nerve wracking & lying still on my back was uncomfortable due to severe SPD.
DS is now a healthy 10month old so doesn't appear to have suffered any ill effects as a consequence.

I found out I was pregnant by having a MRI 16 weeks pregnant at the time and was told its perfectly safe for pregnant women and babies. Especially if the reasons you having MRI could potentially affect the pregnancy.
