Taking tablets while pregnant - morning sickness

Hi everyone!

I am about 9 and a half weeks pregnant at the moment and I've been signed off work with awful morning sickness. Retching a lot and no obvious triggers for it! I've tried all the usual things - ginger, bland foods etc and nothing has helped.
Been given anti-sickness tablets and currently on anti anxiety meds as well which I've decided to stay on. Also taking preg vits.
Problem is I've started really struggling to take any meds now - being sick straight after or retching really badly.
Has anyone else had this problem and can offer any advice?

Thank you

Liquid pregnacare?

I had HG in both my pregnancies and second time around also had to take thyroid meds. I would take cyclizine ( I presume you are on something similar) initially and would give it half an hour to “work” and then take the thyroid meds - I doing staying as still as possible helped to keep it down. I stopped pregnacare ( it can make the nausea worse) and just took folic acid and vitamin d.

The seven seas TTC ones are tiny (contraceptive pill sized) and have the right amount of folic acid. I've stayed on them throughout pregnancy and topped up with a haliborange chewable children's vitamin D tablet as they taste nicer than a lot of sweets (the TTC only have half the recommended amount of vitamin D).

Also if your anti sickness tablets are not working there are a number of others you can try. There is a helpful hyperemesis thread in the pregnancy section of talk with lots of useful advice on medication etc.

I also take tablets every morning, I've been managing to keep them down so far by eating a rice cake first thing and then the tablets. This morning it didn't work and I vomited them straight back up Sad If it's still like this at my booking in next week, I'll ask the midwife for anti-emetics. The last two weeks have been horrible for me (although nowhere near as bad as someone with HG Blush)

I took pregnacare straight before going to sleep. I found I was less likely to experience nausea from it at this time than any other. As for morning tablets, I had regular meds that I was worried I would bring back up with HG. I would wait until I had been sick at least once (as I knew I would be), wait 15 mins and then take them and lie down. I ended up having to amend my morning routine and get up earlier just to accommodate it but managed to get through the first 15 weeks, vomiting up to 10 times a day only bringing my morning meds up twice. It’s horrible though, you have my sympathies!

Thanks everyone.

I'm on cyclizine at the moment, without it I'm a mess and with it I'm better but still quite sick!

I got a sample of Pregnacare stuff which I have been taking - the size of the tabs is ridiculous when I'm trying not to retch! I was taking folic acid before and I might just go back to that like you suggested :) and get some vitamin D as well.

I wasn't best prepared for this to be honest - it was a happy little accident! Haha

You can try other medication or add medication into the cyclizine mix (I’m on a combination of three drugs, cyclizine, prochloroperazine and ondansetron). I recommend taking the medicine when you’re least likely to throw it up. I ate my morning medicine before I get out of bed for the day and wait for a while for it to start to work. I also bought a spray pregnancy vitamin that has vit d and folic acid in as I can’t manage to swallow tablets. It doesn’t have iron but that makes me more sick anyway.

Fwiw for some I don’t medicine will cure this, but it can help. The best things other than medicine is resting, which makes a huge difference to my nausea levels. I’m now 32 weeks and still struggling but it’s a lot better atm than it was in first trimester. Ondansetron has been the game changer drug for me but many gps don’t like prescribing it as it’s very expensive.
