I'm a first time mam and my first doctors appointment is a few days away. I'm all excited and nervous at the same time, can anyone tell me what to expect from this appointment and others to follow?

Is it an appointment with your GP or midwife?

AimeeJay · 27/04/2019 12:36

There are no gp appointments for pregnancy where we live. Just midwives. Do you know why you're booked with the gp?

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 27/04/2019 12:41

How far along are you?

It isn’t terribly exciting- if it’s a first appointment they might do a quick dip stick pregnancy test and they’ll give you some info on diet and make sure you know to take folic acid etc.

@hollowvictory I rang up the doctors to let them know I was pregnant and I said I didnt know who I needed an appointment with and they said first you see the doctor and then the midwife

We only have appointments with midwife here as well. First appointment she just took my blood pressure and gave me some leaflets. She then made an appointment for my booking appointment a few weeks later.

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 27/04/2019 12:44

Most pregnancy appointments are a bit dull to be honest, with the exception of scans or hearing the heartbeat on the Doppler for the first time.

Lots of peeing in cups and getting blood pressure taken!

ChrisPrattsFace · 27/04/2019 12:45

My GP was very helpful, which I know a lot aren’t and just refer straight into midwife.
My baby is a clomid baby and I have other reproductive ‘issues’. She said there was no point in retesting me, my tests will be accurate enough, briefly went through vitamins and healthy lifestyle (which I was already aware of) and then called the early pregnancy unit directly and arranged me an early scan!
Since then I have mostly seen midwifes and occasional GP/consultant due to hyperemesis.

If you have no previous history the. Your GP will likely not do much, ask if planned or not, possible discuss vitamins and lifestyle like mine did?
Good luck op.

My GP appointment was just to get an idea of dates and to go over previous pregnancy history. That information is then sent to the midwives and you'll get your booking in appointment with a midwife at a later date. Took all of 5 mins and is a bit underhwleming

1990carey · 27/04/2019 13:32

I didn't have an appointment with my gp just midwife. I know what u mean tho, I'm a first timer too so even tho everyone was telling me the first appointment wouldn't be very exciting I was excited lol. At ur first midwife appointment it will be about a hour long, they will ask u a lot of questions and they will do a lot of typing so be prepared to be sitting around a lot. They will want a pee sample, so make sure u dont pee right before ur appointment. They will also give u ur notes and book you in for your booking in bloods! How far along are you?

AimeeJay · 27/04/2019 13:45

@1990carey I'm just a combination of nervous and excited, I think I'll feel like this all the way through! I'm 5+2

First apps are with the midwife at 8 weeks here. No GP involvement

Andrea91 · 27/04/2019 15:14

I saw gp first. Only due to me having medical issues before pregnancy. Also I didn't know about pregnancy so she advised on medication she'd previously prescribed. Did a guess at how far I could be. And made sure I took correct pregnancy vitamins also prescribed extra folic acid. And also helped me in self referral to midwife team.

Bambamber · 27/04/2019 18:15

In some areas you can't self refer and you have to have a GP appointment for the GP to do the referral. That's the case in my area, have had to do it in each pregnancy

Heyha · 27/04/2019 20:12

Yep I had GP first as they had to refer round here. Nice chat, nothing exciting other than he gave me my green notes and asked me to fill in the really obvious bits to save the midwife having to do it.
