How does this work?! My midwife mentioned something about a card in the post but i’ve not had anything yet. How long does it take?! I’ve not filled out any paperwork or does the midwife do this?!

You need to fill out a form and send it off and then you’ll get a card that gives you free prescriptions and dental treatment throughout your pregnancy and until your child is 1 year old. I got this form from the receptionist at my GP surgery. Just one thing to note you can only get free dental if you have an NHS dentist.

My midwife gave me the form at my first appointment. She filled most of it out and she and the GP surgery had to stamp it, then I posted it to the address on the form.

My midwife filled the form in for me online and the certificate came in the post a few days later. You don't get a card anymore.
If you have an appointment before it comes you can claim it back I think!

My card only arrived at 30 weeks after my midwife clearly forgot to send the form off. Make sure you chase

My midwife handed me the partly completed form at my booking appointment and showed me which parts I had to fill in and what address to send it to (form states send in supplied envelope - but they’ve stopped supplying it!!) it took just over a week for the certificate to come back after which I got in touch with the NHSBC to cancel my annual prepay certificate and was issued with a refund of approximately 2 1/2 months payments.

It’s really quick as long as the form doesn’t go astray! I filled in mine last Wednesday (second attempt) for the GP to sign and then for the surgery to post off, I received the certificate on the following Tuesday. Considering there were 2 bank holidays in there, I thought that was pretty speedy! On the website it says something like the you’ll get the certificate within 10 working days. If you don’t get your certificate (no longer a card) dochase it. I had to chase mine a short while back (first attempt) and the form had never been received. I was told this happens a lot.

Yes you get the initial partially completed form during one of your early midwife appointments which has the doctors surgery or midwife stamp on it.
You complete the remainder of the form and post it ( you pay for postage).
My exemption certificate was then sent to me within 7 days.
This was last week or so and on the papaer certificate they said they no longer issue plastic cards and instead now send paper certificates.
It also allows you free prescription charges
