I'm currently 16 + 2 weeks pregnant and really suffering with lower back pain and when I say lower I mean it's like where my coccyx is and the pain goes down my right leg. I know you can get back pains in pregnancy but surely not this early I barely even have a bump yet.. This is causing me to struggle getting up, walking and just general moving around. Am I alone on this at this stage of pregnancy or is this normal? The pain feels almost like a have a trapped nerve or something..

It could be SPD. Anything that worries you is best checked with the midwives - just give them a quick ring: much better advice than mumsnet!

Sounds like sciatica to me if it’s running down your leg - mention it to your midwife Smile it’s another one of those pain in the arse (quite literally) problems that can be quite common in pregnancy

I'm seeing my midwife tomorrow but didn't want to mention it to her if it's not something to do with pregnancy. It just took me ages to walk to the kitchen and back which should normally take a second. So painful 😩

Sounds like sciatica like a pp said. I got this with both of my pregnancies. Mention it to your midwife.

pregnantandhurting · 24/04/2019 18:10

Is it normally this early on? I always thought back pains would be when you're further along because of the extra weight?

pregnant from the earliest stages of pregnancy, your joints and ligaments are flooded with a hormone called relaxin which helps your pelvic bones etc stretch to accommodate your growing baby and get that baby out Smile So it’s entirely normal for you to feel these niggles quite early on - it’s not just the weight of a growing baby that causes them.
I had no issues with my first baby - just the “third trimester waddle” Grin I had spd with my second which felt like an awful aching/crunching pain in the bones behind my butt cheeks Blush And I’ve felt those same crunching pains occasionally from about 11 weeks with this baby!

pregnantandhurting · 24/04/2019 18:37

Yeah mine is like in my butt too it's so uncomfortable and painful. Dunno how I'll cope with the back pain when I'm carrying a heavy baby in my tummy if this is the pain I'm feeling now with no extra weight yet

pregnantandhurting it might ease off a bit - some people find that baby pressing on their sciatic nerve causes the pain, then one day baby moves, stops pressing on it and the pain eases off again

agteacht · 24/04/2019 19:58

I have this at only just over 7 weeks, hope to god it doesn't continue!

Sorry you are suffering, hope it passes

harrypotterfan1604 · 24/04/2019 21:42

I had spd and sciatica from around 16 weeks and honestly wish I’d done something about it sooner I suffered for too long thinking it would improve

pregnantandhurting · 24/04/2019 22:09

Is there anything the midwives recommended for the pain with any of you that had spd or sciatica? I hope there's something to ease the pain I struggled really bad at work today and just dread that this will get worse with no relief

I have his too, pain in the sacroiliac joint. It doesn't radiate down my leg but my hips do click in and out, it started around 16 weeks for me too. My midwife seemed to think it was just ligaments stretching out etc. and nothing to worry about even though I can barely move by the end of the day. Confused I may get a second opinion from the GP because on inactive days I'm not too bad but every work day I'm in agony.

Triskaidekaphilia · 24/04/2019 22:59

Oh and I believe if you have either spd or sciatica physio can help. Which is the main reason I'd like to know as I feel it'd benefit me.

harrypotterfan1604 · 25/04/2019 07:21

I found warm baths helped and as I got bigger I used to sit on my birthing ball a lot because it relieved the pain. However the main thing that helped was the physio

JE87 · 25/04/2019 07:30

I had this even earlier on in my pregnancy but it only lasted around a week and then it was gone! Just try and rest up and have a bath and hopefully it will go soon!

OnlyLittleMissOrganised · 25/04/2019 11:51

I'm currently experiencing sciatica. It started about 10 weeks and I'm 12+1 now and currently getting really fed up with. Rang the midwife Tuesday and it's apparently very normal. She said paracetamol and a relaxing bath. The bath is great while in it. However I felt in more pain once I got out than I did before I got in!

Good luck with your pregnancy and pain.

cowchickenduckdog · 25/04/2019 16:49

I had this and by chance my OH bought me one of those mega long U shaped pregnancy pillows where you put it between your legs. The pain literally disappeared overnight when I used it. Might be worth a try? xx

pregnantandhurting · 25/04/2019 18:37

So had my 16 week midwife appointment today and the midwife was pretty useless when it came to talking about my back ache she basically said I'm too early for my backache to be pregnancy related which I know is rubbish because it says about spd and sciatica from early pregnancy all over the web so think if it gets worse I'll just go to the doctor about it..
