Bedding - what is essential in the way of sheets/blankets/grobags?

Off to John Lewis later to stock up on bedding, but I don't know how much you actually need.

We've got a moses basket for the first bit, and a Stokke Sleepi mini-cot too (imagine baby will be sleeping in the moses basket in the day and the cot in our room at night). The Stokke cot extends into a full size cot for when baby has outgrown the mini.

Anyway, in a roundabout way I'm asking whether to buy just big size sheets and blankets so that they'll be suitable for both basket and mini-cot, plus full size cot. Or will they swamp the baby in the moses basket and mini-cot?

And how many do you need? 2 sets of sheets? 3? More?? I remember reading a post when someone advised using adult size pillow cases as bottom sheets for moses baskets which seemed v. sensible.

What about grobags - can they be used for really tiny newborns? I have one which seems so massive.

Help! Thanks

I would be very careful about buying big sheets for basket or little cot, as you will have to double or triple fold to get it to fit, and so baby will have too many layers. I think bottom sheets at full size will be fine though.
I always used the waffle type blakets and a think sheet folded twice.
I tried grow bags too but dd hated them, I cant rememeber if you can use from birth, but should say on packet.
I could be wrong but i think the general guidelines is no more than a 10 tog, so some sheets would make up2-3 tog and a blaket slightly more.

Not sure if that has helped at all

I'm not sure whether large sheets and blankets will fit the moses basket and mini cot properly.

we had 3 sets of small fitted sheets for each sleeping place (2 x crib and 1 moses basket) but you could get small sheets which would be useful later on as cleaning cloths.

I also bought 4 large flat cot bed sheets for swaddling as the Grobag is not recommended for under 7lbs and small babies usually sleep better () when swaddled. we moved onto the Grobags at about 8 weeks

use pillow cases for the moses basket. it really isn't worth buying sheets. and you get teh double benefit of just turning it over in the middle of the night instead of changing it!

i would use a shawl for a newborn and grobag when they are a more reasonable size.

Def use pillowcases as sheets for the moses basket and the tiny cot but I'd just use the mismatched ones from the airing cupboard, don't go mad buying new.
They may get sicked on a lot so it's handy to have at least 3 - one on, one off and one in the wash (or stick a muslin over the head end).

Moses-basket size blankets are handy for the pram as well (and later for the pushchair) as they don't drag on the ground, and they won't get sicked on as much as the bottom sheets, ditto top sheets.

NB don't you need special sheets with curved ends for the big Stokke? Does JL do them?

Hello, I am having my first and have just bought a stokke. I have NO idea about bedding for it though!

I am thinking I will need some kind of mattress protector and some fitted sheets.

should i get top sheets plus heavier blankets or a little sleeping bag type thing? And do I need a bumper for the mini crib ?

Thanks for any help in advance, am bamboozled by the choice!

I would buy fitted sheets instead of flat - i believe they are safer personally. Fitted sheets for moses are available in supermarkets dead cheap. I'd get at least 2, and perhaps 4 if you also have a pram with carrycot that will need a sheet 2.

I can bet that Stokke will sell fitted sheets for their cot. I can also bet that they will be very pricey but that is what you get for buying an expensive cot I'm afraid. I'd buy one on, one in the wash in each size.

Also no you should not buy a crib bumper as they are not recommended due to them posing a safety risk.

I would go for a sleeping bag over top sheets and blankets. Much much easier. For a newborn I'd get a couple of swaddles too and then move on to sleeping bags by 3 months.

I have a (second hand) Stokke, mini used first, then full size, then the full size with one side down, my three year old just moved into a bed.
Yes, you will want a protective sheet for both the mini and full size and you will need to get the ones made for the cribs. And yes, expensive crib, expensive extras. I got even the bedding second hand actually (but wasn't in the UK, so I don't know if it's possible even if that is something you would consider). I only had 2 fitted sheets for the mini, was fine for me; you should be careful to make sure the fitted sheets on the mini fit nicely if you use/make something other than the brand ones, important for a little baby. For the full size I found when I needed a couple of extra sheets, the regular ones without the rounded edges worked just fine. No bumper for either needed.
