Really Rude Consultant

Hello all ,

Just wondering if anyone had endured the same or similar situation , I have been midwife led care through my pregnancy and my midwife has been amazing ! Due to SPD being really bad and baby measuring big she transferred me to the hospital to see the consultant.

I'm 39 weeks but baby is measuring 2weeks bigger , when I saw the consultant last week he attempted a stretch and sweep but this failed due to my cervix still being closed , he also said that due to the size baby was measuring and how much pain I was in with SPD he would book me to be induced this week and also attempt another stretch and sweep ,

On Friday morning went to the hospital however this was a false alarm however the midwife did carry out a stretch and sweep and said I was 2cm dilated,

So we come to today's appointment with the consultant ... he did nothing ... he didn't measure baby , check my urine , check my blood pressure nothing ! He said it was pointless doing a stretch and sweep and I should book in with my midwife ... he also said he hadn't booked my induction so as they were now fully booked this wouldn't be until the 1/5/19 I explained to him how much pain I was in and couldn't sleep due to the SPD his words were 'we see many ladies in discomfort'

I'm just so annoyed and overwhelmed by his attitude and the fact he lied to me last week :(

I had my first “shared care” appointment with Consultant last week. It was awful. He was rude and dismissed all of my questions and put me back to Midwife care. Thankfully, I read on here that loads of Consultants are exactly the same and show you little or no interest, so whilst I was pissed off about it being a waste of time, at least he didn’t completely ruin my 20 week scan.

Sorry you got the same treatment and hope you get better care moving forward Flowers

I’m sympathetic. I’ve just been transferred to consultant led care and really wasn’t impressed at my first appointment. I hope your baby arrives soon.

WeeBean · 24/04/2019 09:13

I'm also sympathetic! I was transferred to (what I think is) shared care due to GD (was told my midwife appointments were cancelled then had a call from my midwife when I missed an appointment 🙄)

My first consultant appointment was horrible, he didn't explain anything, let me ask one question (which he interrupted) and only answered one aspect of it. He then did my growth scan and said all was average but when I looked at the print out after the measurements were all different, from 28+3 to 33+3, I was 29+5 at the time. I'm a FTM and didn't understand it. It actually left me feeling pretty down and lost for a good week.

I hope your care improves and you get to meet your wee one asap!

My first consultant appointment was horrible, I had been referred by the midwives as baby was measuring big. I went in there and he just went 'why are you here?' I just didn't know how to respond. I told him that I was referred as baby has been measuring big at all scans, he told me that basically no reason to be there and told me to go. I was really upset as he made me feel foolish for being there, when I hadn't even set up the appointment!

I wasn't impressed at my first consultant appt either. Slightly different that I'm consultant led due to twins but I was literally there 5 mins. He was more interested in asking me about the origin on my surname than anything else. Then he just booked me in for my next appt which is 10 weeks away, when I was told it should be every 4 weeks.
I didn't ask him any questions as I just didn't feel comfortable with him or that he really knew what he was talking about.
I'm really hoping that I see someone different next time!

Mine was lovely but I had zika exposure so they couldn't really get rid of me!
Midwifes generally are better and at least the baby seemed okay which is main things
Congrats o pregnancy

I am already dreading my consultant appointment!

But I can be very forthright when required - so if they try being rude or dismissive to me, they will get rude back and I won't leave if I'm not happy.
I had a full on row with a nurse this week due to my shoddy GP practice. I do a good angry at the best of times - when you add in pregnancy hormones I am lethal.

But when you are vulnerable not everyone can fight their own corner and pregnancy seems to make some medical staff think they can say or do whatever they like.

@Chelseaftm Hope baby appears soon. If you have the energy I'd kick up a fuss. Contact PALS.

Chelseaftm · 24/04/2019 14:58

Thankyou all , I'm sorry you are all having a rubbish time with your consultants nothing worse then not feeling empathised with when we are so vulnerable during pregnancy!

@Megan2018 Thankyou for your advice I contacted PALS today and they will forward this on as a formal complaint so hopefully the issues will get raised !

@boodles101, I’m also under consultant care for twins (and my age, family history of eclampsia and ivf pregnancy!!) I was seen in the consultant clinic just under 2 weeks ago - the dr I saw really didn’t inspire me with confidences!!

He spent most of the appointment scrolling through an article on the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists all about MCMA twins looking for advice on appointment schedules for DCDA twins then told me not to bother reading it’s it as it wasn’t relevant to my type of pregnancy - I found the correct document within 2 minutes of googling when I got home - said he would see me every 4 weeks in antenatal clinic after my scans from 24 weeks onwards and wrote that in my notes. Didn’t show any interest in discussing how I personally am feeling or discussing risks due to my age or them being IVF babies!!

Got a letter through for follow up appointment in a hospital that doesn’t do scans so I knew it wasn’t the appointment he said would go with scans, checking with the hospital they said it was an additional appointment based on medical results (I’ve had all my results from my midwife and all normal so far) then I was put through to fetal medicine clinic who said the appointment is a mistake and I don’t need it, oh and I won’t be seeing anyone from the hospital until I’m around 30-32 weeks and only then to discuss inducing my labour at 37+ weeks. All my appointments aren’t o be with community midwife.

Suffice to say I’ve lost what faith I had in the hospital so, as of today, I’ve transferred my care to a hospital in the next county (these are the only 2 hospitals in a 50+ mile drive in any direction so not a lot of choice) where I will at least get 4 weekly reviews by the hospital twins team after each scan and will see my midwife in between these appointments!!

I saw many consultants through my high risk pregnancy all of which were lovely except one. He was vile and asked how my husband felt about the fact I'd not had sex yet at the 6 week check up.

I had severe internal tearing that has caused life long issues and was advised by my surgeon (female might I add) that I shouldn't have sex for at least 3 months due to the injuries I sustained.

I'm still angry that I didn't complain.
