Q for those who are expecting/have had non identical twins

I know I know I know
My chances are very slim, it would be a massively hard slog and I’ll be happy with any healthy baby. Don’t have a scan for another month
But I really like the idea of having twins . A boy and a girl. Time is not on my side if I decide to have another child after this one so it would be nice to have a boy and a girl.
Just wondering what peoples ages and family history was for those who have had/having them?
P.s. DH it deffo not in agreement with me . He just wants one . End of

Young - late 20's, No family history of twins, not over weight, 3rd pregnancy. So it was very unexpected for us!

Comps83 · 23/04/2019 11:05

Wow yeah I bet that was a shock !

I was 36 - had been off the pill for 2 weeks and got pregnant with boy/girl twins. Sadly I lost them both at 19 weeks into the pregnancy but it was one hell of a rollercoaster of emotions, let me tell you!

Comps83 · 23/04/2019 11:24

Aw so sorry @Squiff70
I think it’s terriying how common losses are. I think a lot of people don’t realise that. Which is why DH and I have had numerous blazing rows about telling people before the first scan

My friend had twins when they went for a third (actually we know a lot of people this happened to!). All over 35 and with no history of twins in the family. Apparently the older you are, your body releases more eggs sometimes.

I’ve just worked it out (using Ancestry.com of all things) that my gt grandma had her twins at 34. But if the theory of skipping a generation is correct then I should have been a twin

Late 20s, not overweight, no family history. Unfortunately my twins arrived very prematurely, one of my daughters died in hospital and the other will always be dealing with the aftermath of her early birth as it has left with mild disabilities. I am very lucky that she survived in such relatively good health.

I didn’t particularly have a wish for twins but I certainly hoped to only see one baby at my scans in subsequent pregnancies. I hadn’t realised how common complications can be. I’m afraid I’m with you DH on this one.

Comps83 · 23/04/2019 13:20

@AWhistlingWoman really sorry to hear that

32, second pregnancy, miscarried my first. No history of twins in the family. Had non ID girls at 37 weeks, both fab weights - nearly 6lb and just over. It's true that the older you get the chances of non ID twins increases as your body releases more than one egg, or has a tendency to.

AWhistlingWoman · 23/04/2019 13:35

Thank you @Comps83

Feel like I have been a bit doom and gloom on your thread! Sorry!

Obviously twin pregnancies can, and often do, go perfectly fine. Just as pregnancies with a single baby can still develop complications. No guarantees in any situation.

I do still get very anxious when I hear others are expecting twins, on the basis of my own experience!

Hope that everything goes well and your baby (or babies!) arrive(s) happy and healthy.

Comps83 · 23/04/2019 13:37

Thanks
I don’t think it will be twins. I haven’t got major symptoms. Just sore boobs and BFPs . Otherwise I’d have no clue I was even pregnant with the mini pill messing my cycle up so much to start with

My mum had two sets of non identicals! Me and my brother when she was 30 and my sisters at 34. Runs in my family though I have nonidentical cousins and her great aunt also had non identical twins.

Amelia910 · 23/04/2019 16:28

She calls it ‘double yolking’ 😣🤢

Middledistancerunner · 23/04/2019 17:41

@Amelia910 ‘double yoking’ Grin

I say ‘buy one get one free’ Grin

I’m 38, 3rd pregnancy, non-identical boy-girl twins.
No history of twins in my family so you may be in luck yet. I also haven’t had any awful symptoms, at least no worse and some better than the previous two Singleton Pregnancy’s.
Good luck x

BIL & SIL have non identical twins when trying for their second. They were conceived via IVF and both Granddads are identical twins (not with each other, obviously)

CyclingSquirrel · 23/04/2019 17:48

I think clomid can give you a natural boost in that direction - I believe it's one of the drugs women in China were using to get around the one child policy.
