Anti-D bloodtest confusion

Hi all. I'm having my anti-d injection on Friday, as I'm rhesus negative. It'll also make up my 28 week midwife appointment (though I'll technically be 30 weeks), so usual time for diabetes test.

On Tuesday, I'm having a blood test, and I can't work out if that is the diabetes test, or if it's something to do with the anti-d. Anyone know?

I can't call the doctor as it's bank holiday Monday, and I have no idea if I need to restrict what I eat/drink before the blood test at all. Anyone have any ideas?

Not sure why I left it till the last minute to consider this...

I think they take bloods at 28 weeks as standard, similar to how they do at booking in. So not really connected to either although diabetes could be indicated by the bloods and you’d do a follow up, but it’s just general bloods checking lots of things.

From my knowledge, you're supposed to and get bloods done the week before you're scheduled for your anti d injection.
Then they also take separate bloods if you're scheduled for the gestational diabetes around the same time, but you should have received letters with which appointment is which.
But then as pp said, they also do general bloods at 28 weeks 😂

The gestational diabetes test I'm having at 28 weeks takes 2hrs! You have to have bloods taken, then wait two hours after drinking a glucose drink to have them taken again - if you haven't had previous info I would think the tests were just routine 28 week ones, you don't automatically get tested for diabetes so unless they've said you need to, you may not need that done

RMarieClaire · 21/04/2019 21:43

@Justincase87 oh, I assumed everyone had one? I feel like the midwife said something about it in my last appointment, but I can't remember exactly what. Guess I'll ask on Friday 🤷‍♀️

You'll have your 28 weeks bloods done which is normally a full blood count and blood group and screen.

Make sure you find out by Thursday if you're having the diabetes blood test as you would need to fast beforehand

You have bloods taken at 28 weeks and are also given anti d if you have negative blood. The routine bloods test amongst over things to see if you've any antibodies in your blood stream, indicating whether or not your blood has mixed with babies positive blood before now. They told me after mine I had low iron so they check that too. The diabetes test (the glucose tolerance test) isn't routine, I've had it when I've developed extra fluid, I think you get one with extreme weight gain too or if baby is measuring very big for gestation. If you were having that you aren't allowed to eat or drink for a good while before the appointment (I've midnight the night before in my head but not 100%) and they should've wrote to you or put GTT in your notes. I'd check with the booking line/midwife either way but sounds like routine bloods. X

Midwife here, everybody has bloods taken at 28 weeks to recheck iron level and blood group & antibodies.

You'll have your anti-D if you're a Rhesus Negative blood group.

The diabetes test is for women who meet certain criteria at booking e.g. BMI over 30, family history of diabetes, PCOS etc, or as a PP said if you develop too much fluid around the baby at any point, if baby or your bump measures bigger than it should or if you have and glucose in your urine.

Hope that helps you!

Thank you all! @MooChops89 I think in this case my blood test is tomorrow. Should I fast 12 hours beforehand? It's at 8.10 so easily done, but I do get a bit fainty so if it's not crucial then I would prefer not to.
